The KXTE9 accelerometer from Kionix (Ithaca, NY) has embedded algorithms for orientation and activity monitoring. The algorithms simplify the adoption of motion-based functionality in consumer electronics, while reducing operating power consumption.

The sensor’s orientation-detection feature reports changes in landscape, portrait, face-up, and face-down conditions. The embedded algorithm eliminates the need for continuous data collection and complex microprocessor calculations. It enables the implementation of screen rotation. An activity-monitoring function reports changes in a device’s motion state, active or inactive. By providing this information to a device, the accelerometer enables power management.
