Developing Smart and Affordable Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Technologies: Five Trends to Watch

The demand for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) technology and infrastructure is growing significantly. For example, in the 10 years from 2002 to 2011, U.S. Defense spending on ISR grew by a factor of six, compared with relatively flat defense spending overall [House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, 2012]. Similar patterns of spending can be seen around the globe. Simulation-based engineering has long played a role in advancing ISR technology development — from unmanned systems to antennas to systems and embedded software. The value proposition has long been proven.
