A modular direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) cartridge and stack design offers flexible assembly, efficiency improvements, and higher performance in methanol fuel cell assemblies. Conductive polymer micro DMFC plates with different flow field designs were evaluated to determine their performance efficiencies. Higher power densities were obtained for polymer plates with specific flow field designs. The technology provides a fuel cell plate design that optimizes fluid flow field efficiency, and presents a method for heating the direct methanol fuel cell stack on startup.
