Diaphragm-type vacuum pumps and compressors are well suited to a variety of medical device applications due to their ability to operate efficiently over a broad range of flows and pressures, and keep the fluid path completely sealed. A downside is flow pulsation – a limitation characteristic of most reciprocating pumps – which can create challenges for systems integrators in terms of flow measurement and control. This article will focus on some simple techniques for reliable and repeatable measurement of flow and pressure, particularly where the pumped media is air or an otherwise compressible gas.
