The ED Series of rotary magnetic encoders from Measurement Specialties (Hampton, VA) provides a platform for optical encoder and potentiometer replacement. The encoders use encapsulated (potted) electronics, eliminating contamination, even in severe conditions. The ED-18, ED-19, ED-20, and ED-21 encoders are offered in several packages, and feature resolutions from 64 to 1,024 counts per rotation, and integrated line driver options with active termination for longer cable runs. Analog versions are available with outputs from 0 to 5V DC, 0.5 to 4.5V DC, 0 to 20 mA, or 4-20 mA, which can be used as industrial potentiometer replacements or as human-machine interface devices.

Applications include positional feedback, control knobs, motor control, servo valve positioning, steering and throttle control, pump speed and direction, camera positioning, and medical and test equipment. The encoders feature de-coupling of the magnet (rotating) side from the electronics package, which enables the sensor portion to be protected behind a non-ferrous barrier. The modular design allows for custom mechanical packaging, additional electronic capabilities, or full integration into custom assemblies.
