Managing the people, data, and activities associated with NASA’s Engineering Review Process (ERP) presents challenges to engineers and mission planners. The ERP generates paperwork, involves the coordination of Engineering Review Board (ERB) members, and requires complete and careful documentation of engineering issues, in progress and resolved. Essential to any process is the ability of a user community to capture, store, and retrieve information. The type of information generated throughout the ERP builds the database of information that enables metrics to be established and lessons learned to be tracked.

NASA’s engineering community needed enabling tools to make the ERP easier to administer so that mission planners could focus on the unique technical challenges of each mission. The Engineering Review Board Information System (ERBIS) was created by a.i. solutions to document, manage, and facilitate the communication that is critical to the ERP. ERBIS allows the initiating engineer to log in through the ERBIS portal and open an Engineering Review Sheet (ERS). ERBIS automatically assigns an ERS number and provides an automated notification process for the appropriate reviewers. The automatic tracking system allows engineers to view the progress on action items, open issues, and final resolution. The built-in, mandatory approval process enables the ERB members to better manage the resolution process.

ERBIS provides an efficient way for NASA to enforce the ERP. The Web-based system is available to all approved users from any location. The ERBIS knowledge database is searchable by launch vehicle, mission, part number, system, or vendor. It enables the creation of metrics that facilitates trending and tracking of issues used in risk evaluation, and helps reduce risk through the use of a repeatable process.
