Liquid Sensor

A liquid sensor from SST Sensing Ltd. (Coatbridge, Scotland) detects leaks using built-in microcontroller functionality. Requiring no moving parts, the liquid-level switch employs an infrared sensing mechanism. If a liquid contacts the sensor tip, the device changes the properties of the optical setup. Less light is thus incident on the device’s phototransistor, leading to change in output voltage. The Optomax-based product allows telecom operators/carriers to be rapidly alerted of the presence of water in their fiber-optic cabinets, base stations, and pico cells. The sensor supports temperature ranges from -25 to 80 °C. Booth #: 316

Gas Detectors

Laser Gas Detectors from Axetris (Itasca, IL) spot methane and carbon dioxide simultaneously. The devices can be used in medical applications, such as breath analysis. Elevated methane levels suggest indigestion and are a possible indicator of fructosemia or lactose intolerance. Carbon dioxide, another quality indicator, signals whether the subject is taking sufficiently long and deep breaths. An alternative to more invasive procedures, the spectroscopic analysis of breath air potentially shortens the period needed to conduct tests from hours to seconds. Booth #: 924

Antenna

Linx Technologies (Merlin, OR) has introduced the Industrial Dipole Antenna. The ½-wave centerfed antenna operates at 2.4 GHz. Industrial and outdoor applications include outdoor meters, solar panel controls, and other sensor monitoring and control systems. The ID Series antenna has a bracket molded into the assembly, which protects against stresses that may occur during installation or operation in an indoor or outdoor environment. The material used in both the antenna structure and the cable itself has a temperature range of -40 °C to +85 °C. Booth #: 1140

Photomultiplier Module

First Sensor (Westlake Village, CA) offers a new development module for its silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs). The photomultiplier technology detects ultra-low light levels in the wavelength range from 350 nm to 900 nm. The module integrates a stable voltage supply, signal amplification, interfaces, and the SiPM detector in a compact plug-and-play unit.

Included software optimizes the detector’s operating point to the respective application. For the measurement of ionizing radiation, the silicon photomultiplier can optionally be equipped with a LYSO scintillation crystal whose luminescence radiation is in the visible range at around 420 nm. Typical applications of the silicon photomultiplier module include test runs and qualifications in high-energy physics, medical diagnostics, nuclear medicine, homeland security, and analytical instruments. DC-DC Power Converter

Microchip Technology (Chandler, AZ) has released a Digitally Enhanced Power Analog (DEPA) product for DC-DC power conversion: the MCP19215 single-chip power analog device. The single-chip technology controls DC-DC converters and accepts a high voltage input (up to 42V) while simultaneously regulating an output voltage range from 300 mV to several hundred volts (depending on topology).

The dual controller handles two flyback, SEPIC, boost, and Ćuk circuits simultaneously. Alternatively, the MCP19215 can be configured to control one power train bidirectionally, maintaining voltage or current regulation in either direction through the power converter. For automotive applications, the MCP19215 also features low quiescent current sleep modes and the ability to survive load dump transient conditions.

Additionally, the device can be programmed to shut down other loads and enter sleep mode, allowing direct connection to the battery with minimal power consumption when the engine is not running. Booth #: 716

Accelerometer

A new accelerometer from Analog Devices (Norwood, MA) provides long-period monitoring of the physical condition of high-value assets. The ADXL372 micropower high-g MEMS accelerometer targets Internet of Things (IoT) applications where shock and impact on a unit during storage, transit, or use would adversely affect its function, safety, or reliability. Representative assets include materials inside shipping and storage containers, factory machinery, and battery-powered products where there may be lengthy quiet periods punctuated by spontaneous, severe impacts.

The MEMS sensor has an “instant on” feature and can wake up immediately to acquire the entire waveform, which significantly reduces standby power drain. When used as a remote edge-node device, the ADXL372 MEMS accelerometer’s localized processor captures and categorizes transient events, and sends them to the cloud or other data center via a wireless link. The bandwidth of 3200 Hz and dynamic range of ±200 g additionally support health-monitoring applications, including the monitoring of concussions for indication of traumatic brain injury.
