A new process produces microspheres of an extremely narrow size distribution and high homogeneity, measuring between 2 and 10 μm. The process can make the microscopic spheres from any material that can be polymerized; acrylic and styrene spheres have been produced.
The microscopic spheres are so uniform that no size classification is necessary after production. Sphericity is greater than 98.5%. Surfaces can either be smooth or porous, with an adjustable particle pore size. Smooth particle size distribution is ±0.1 micrometer (CV=5–8%), and porous particle size distribution is ±0.2 micrometer (CV=8–10%). Mechanical properties, such as hardness, can be controlled through selection of materials.
