MP3 and MP4 players, along with powerful Class-D headphone amplifiers, can cause hearing loss due to a continuously high sound pressure level (SPL). A Hungarian university has developed an electronic device for preventing hearing loss and simulating ear distortion. The invention is a simple module that models the distortion of the human ear and produces natural sound experience with low sound pressure level.
Without changing the full-range frequency response, the device raises the sensation of volume. The amplification method advantageously affects the SPL/Sound Perceptional ratio. Potential areas of use include hearing aids, headphone amplifiers, audiophile sound technology, microphone amplifiers, guitar effects, PA-systems, and multi-channel surround-sound systems.
