The TONiC optical encoder from Renishaw, Hoffman Estates, IL, provides the accuracy of fine-pitch encoders in a rugged, simple-to-install package. It employs a compact read head (35mm long × 13.5mm wide × 10mm high for design/application flexibility and installation; even on micro-manufacturing systems for the semiconductor, lab and medical fields. Available in both linear and rotary versions, the encoder offers speeds up to 10 m/s (3.24 m/s at 0.1 μm resolution), resolution to 5 nm, and handles operating temperatures up to 70°C.

Two integral read-head LEDs ease set-up and diagnostics. The encoder reads various linear and rotary scale types, including a new version of Renishaw’s gold scale featuring the auto-phase IN-TRAC(TM) optical reference mark. Integral dual limits are also available, enabling users to select end-of-travel position.
