Optical Channel Monitor

AMS Technologies (Martinsried, Germany) has introduced the Optical Channel Monitor, which provides critical data on optical transmission signals present in DWDM networks with a scan time of less than 100msec. The Optical Channel Monitor includes a fixed fiber grating and a high resolution detector array, resulting in an accuracy better than 50 pm. The recorded data can be used to determine system functionality, identify performance drift or as feedback data for controlling telecommunication network elements. The OCM is designed to cover a wide range of spectral bandwidths and channel spacing applications (100, 50 and 25 GHz).

Reflective Semiconductor Optical Amplifier

The new reflective semiconductor optical amplifier (RSOA) component from CIP (Ipswich, UK) provides high-speed transmission capability for wavelength division multiplexing passive optical networks (WDM-PON) by reflecting and modulating a “seed” light that is transmitted throughout the network. The component is capable of delivering more than 20 dB of optical gain and provides optical data transmission at gigabit Ethernet rates without the need for a local wavelength stabilized source or temperature control. The RSOA component is available in a TO-56 can package for easy integration into micro-optic assemblies. Data can be modulated at rates of up to 1.25 Gbits/sec from standard production devices. Polarization sensitive or polarization insensitive versions are offered.

LED Indicator Light

DDP (El Segundo, CA) has designed a solid-state LED indicator light called the P81 that features a snap-in installation to a ½" panel opening. The P81 can be modified to include a shunt resistor and metal oxide varistor to protect against circuit noise and transient voltage spikes in critical monitoring and harsh environment applications. To enhance angular visibility, the P81 is offered with clear or colored Lexan lenses in stove pipe or flush mount configurations. The RoHS-compliant P81 LED indicator lights are available in six colors and in nine standard AC and DC voltages.

LAD provides a platform for simulating and optimizing fiber amplifiers, and amplifying spontaneous emission sources and fiber laser systems. LAD v4.0 includes wizards that allow for creating designs and running simulations through a step-by-step approach. The software also includes a multimode analysis of coiled fibers, optimization tool, and variable step size in transient analysis. Add-ons include a concentrated conversion table, splice loss estimations, and mode field and cutoff calculation.

iC-Haus Corp. USA (Naperville, IL) introduces the iC-MH, a system-on-chip solution for magnetic sensor applications. The iC-MH’s 5 x 5 mm QFN28 package contains integrated Hall sensors with signal amplifier and gain control, two A/D converters for incremental and commutation signals, integrated RS-422 line drivers, and the serial BiSS/SSI-interface. It features angle resolution programmable to 4,096 steps per turn, and the output edge rate of 8 MHz can support motor speeds to 120 RPM. The commutation signals UVW are available to drive motors with two and four poles.
