White LEDs

OSRAM (Santa Clara, CA) has introduced white LEDs with an operating current of 350 mA, brightness peaked at a value of 155 lm, and efficiency at 136 lm/W. Potential applications for the high-performance LED technology include general illumination, the automotive sector, and any application that requires large, high-power LEDs. These semiconductor light sources are also suitable for high operating currents. At 1.4 A, they can produce up to 500 lm of white light. In the future, the LEDs can also be used for projection applications as blue and green chip versions.

Light Source Software

Radiant Imaging (Duvall, WA) has released ProSource 8.0 software for light source near-field data analysis and ray generation. ProSource 8.0 generates ray data that accurately represent the output of the light source and can be exported for use with all popular optical and illumination system design software packages. Users can control the number of rays generated, angular range of the rays, total luminous flux of the ray set, and ray origin. Photopic and color ray sets (RGB) are supported, and the number of rays that can be generated is limited only by disk space.

ML7 BGS sensors

Pepperl+Fuchs, Twinsburg, OH, has introduced the ML7 Background Suppression (BGS) photoelectric sensors that feature a 31 x 11 x 23 mm housing, and a sensing range of up to 350 mm. Background suppression optimizes the detection of variously colored targets without the need for reflectors or thru-beam sensing arrangements. Objects in the background, even directly behind the target, are ignored. The sensors feature automatic cross-talk protection that enables multiple sensors to be mounted side-by-side with no interference. LED indicators provide power and output status, as well as diagnostic information. The sensors also feature 4-in-1™ output technology that automatically detects the connected load, and sinks or sources as needed. The ML7 BGS sensors have an adjustable sensing range that can be customized. Applications include converting, material handling, packaging, and assembly operations that require long sensing ranges. Model 3390

Keithley Instruments, Cleveland, OH, has introduced the Model 3390 50- MHz arbitrary waveform/function generator, a programmable signal generator with function, pulse, and arbitrary waveform capabilities. Features include 50-MHz maximum sine wave frequency, 25 MHz pulse frequency with 10-nanosecod minimum width, and 256K, 14-bit resolution arbitrary waveform generation. The built-in function generator includes capabilities such as sine, square, triangle, noise, and DC. The unit incorporates LXI Class C-compliant Ethernet, with USB and standard GPIB interfaces, as well as built-in AM, FM, PM, FSK, and PWM modulation. Pulses and square waves feature less than 10-nanosecond rise/fall times. A 10-MHz external time base is included for multiple-unit synchronization. The unit includes KiWAVE software, a waveform creation utility for creating custom arbitrary waveforms and managing waveform memory. It enables users to view waveforms in real units and perform waveform editing. For Free Info

Thin Motor

The MigaOne™ motor from Miga Motor Company (Berkeley, CA) is a powerful but lightweight linear actuator built directly onto a PCB substrate. Now being adapted for use by NASA and Boeing, the wafer-thin motor is smaller than a credit card, measuring less than 0.1in. The motor eliminates bulky gears and leadscrews and occupies less than 10% the weight and volume of a comparable motor or solenoid.

Heavy-Duty Slide

The HepcoMotion HDS2 from Bishop-Wisecarver (Pittsburg, CA), offers system capacities up to 68kN, and adds new bearing sizes including a 150mm diameter vee bearing and a 144mm diameter taper roller bearing. Maximum single bearing capacity is 50kN, compared to 20kN previously. Low friction cap wipers expel dirt and debris, and provide continuous lubrication for long service life. A removable cover allows easy system adjustment without disassembly.
