Linear Actuator

Bishop-Wisecarver Corp. (Pittsburg, CA) has released the SRX-150, an aluminum profile linear actuator in belt- or ball-screw-driven versions. Both versions are available in 400, 600, 1000, 1500, and 1900 mm stroke lengths. The SRX-150 provides to 66kN dynamic load capacity, roll moment capacity to 3,380 Nm, and speeds to 5 m/s. A variety of connecting brackets, line shafts, and couplers simplifies gantry system design. The linear actuator offers zero backlash and long stroke operation. The SRX-150 is equipped with NSK K1 lubrication units for operation. End of travel energy-absorbing bumpers help eliminate damage caused by accidental crashes.

Rotating Machinery Software

Vector Fields (Aurora, IL) has announced a design software for rotating electrical machinery that is part of the OPERA electromagnetic design tool. The software combines finite element analysis modeling with a design entry system that allows users to create electric motor or generator models. The software provides a front end to the electromagnetic simulator that speeds design entry by means of “fill in the blanks” dialog boxes. Users can select the form of motor or generator they want to design from a list of all common types, including induction, brushless permanent magnet, switched reluctance motors, and synchronous motors or generators. Then, by entering a list of parameters — such as diameters of rotor, stator, shaft, stator tooth width, number of stator slots — to define mechanical geometry, material properties, and electrical data, the model is automatically created. If there are any unusual features that need to be incorporated in designs, OPERA can offer open access to the scripting codes that generate the models, and users can modify them at will to create a proprietary automated design process. A library of material properties is also included in the design software that can be selected from a drop-down menu.

VHD Assemblies

Kerk Motion Products (Hollis, NH) offers the VHD Series anti-backlash assemblies suitable for eliminating drag and wear associated with high pre-load forces. The VHD assembly uses Kerk’s patented axial take-up mechanism, creating a space that will continually expand to accommodate wear that may occur during use. The self-lubricating VHD Series reduces noise and dust as encountered in the packaging industry. Since airborne paper dust is regularly generated in the cartoning and case packing area, almost everything eventually becomes covered in a light layer of dust. The VHD screw does not require grease to operate and therefore reduces noise and dust.
