Photon Camera

The Imaging Photon Camera from PHOTONIS (Sturbridge, MA) operates under light-starved conditions. The device features micrometer resolution, picosecond timing, a full 18-mm wide field of view, and a count rate up to 5MHz (with no added read noise). A microchannel plate detector addresses the problem of electron noise. The Imaging Photon Camera connects to any microscopy or imaging device via a standard C-Mount. In Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging Microscopy applications, the position of individual molecules, fluorescence time and diffusion, or dynamics can be determined at high resolution levels.

Photometrics® (Tucson, AZ) has announced the Prime 95B™ Scientific CMOS camera. The Prime 95B camera, built on the GSENSE400BSI-TVISB sensor, combines backside illumination (BSI) technology with large pixels and low-noise characteristics to maximize light collection. The Prime 95B, optimized for low-light microscopy, features a 95 percent QE and 11 × 11μm pixel area. The camera captures images using the full microscope field-of-view at over 41 frames per second (fps) with 16-bit images (and 82 fps with 12-bit images).

Point Grey (Richmond, BC, Canada) has announced the Blackfly S series of USB3 Vision and GigE Vision cameras. The 5 MP Blackfly S BFS-U3-51S5 model uses the Sony Pregius IMX250 global shutter CMOS sensor, featuring 2448 × 2048 image resolution at 75 FPS. The 1.3 MP Blackfly S BFS-U3-13Y3 model includes the ON Semi PYTHON 1300 global shutter CMOS sensor, with 1280 × 1024 image resolution at 175 fps.

Hexapod

Aerotech’s (Pittsburgh, PA) HexGen™ hexapods represent a significant advance in six-degree-of-freedom positioning performance. The HEX500-350HL is driven by AC brushless, slotless servomotors and actuated with six high-accuracy struts that are built with precision preloaded bearings, ball screws, and drive components. The servomotors are directly coupled to the actuator ball-screw, enabling increased drive stiffness, higher positioning accuracy, and better minimum incremental motion (20 nm in XYZ and 0.2 μrad for θxθyθz) when compared to competitive designs that use belts or compliant couplings. The strut pivot-joints are engineered to provide low friction and high stiffness.

The Phantom VEO® from Vision Research (Wayne, NJ) incorporates 12-bit, 35-mm CMOS sensors (color or mono) with a choice of lens mount. At maximum resolution, the one-megapixel (1280×800) Phantom VEO 710 and 410 records at speeds up to 7,400 frames-per-second (fps) and 4,000 fps respectively, while the four-megapixel (2560×1600) VEO 640 and 340 records at speeds of 1,400 fps and 800 fps respectively.

Microscopy Camera

Basler USA (Exton, PA) has introduced an additional Basler PowerPack for Microscopy. The new PowerPack includes the Microscopy pulse 3.3 MP camera. With its 4:3 sensor format, the “pulse” 3.3 MP fits to the image circle of a microscope and reaches up to 20 frames per second. Additionally, an enhanced version of the Basler Microscopy Software offers image adjustment sliders on the top level of the user interface and shows the speed of the camera measured in frames per second.
