Development of Organic Materials that Melt by Light Irradiation

AIST has developed organic materials that melt from solid to liquid with only the irradiation of light, without heating, and can be restored to their original solid state. Unlike irreversible photosensitive resins, which cannot be restored to their original state after their state has changed once, the developed organic materials undergo state transitions by photoisomerization. These synthesized compounds have a molecular weight of about 1,100-1,700 and undergo photoisomerization even in crystals, so that they change from solid state to liquid state by light.

LED-Based Lighting is Two Times Brighter Than Other Technology

Code 3Code 3’s TriCore is an LED-based optical lighting technology that is two times brighter than other technology currently on the market, according to the company. It uses only one-third the power of conventional lighting systems, yielding higher watt-for-watt efficiency. The brightness and efficiency is achieved through a design that combines an LED chip with an optical-based lens system. The LED chip (die) system overcomes all limitations imposed by pre-packaged LEDs, and the optical-based lens system removes the inefficiencies within reflective-based lighting technology.

Self-Healing Slide Ring Material Paint

A slide ring material (SRM) paint is able to heal a majority of surface scratches by itself. Electronic Device for Damping Impacts

Springs, polymers, and pneumatic or hydraulic devices react to impacts, but a recently developed damping technology calculates and controls the forces that should be applied. Within the device, two electromagnets with different polarities are put in contact, and the repulsion force is used against the forces generated by contact. A specialized micro-controlled circuit connected to special sensors calculates, in real time, the appropriate level of magnetic field strength, in order to dampen the received impact, whose intensity of force can be contained in a wide variation field.

Volume-Changing Primary Glass Material

This technology produces a silica glass material with a promising negative refractive index. The material changes volume via irradiation under UV light, and results in a refractive index capability of 10-2. This makes it applicable to a wide range of fields, including holograms, optical memory, digital recording, and others. The glass has a composition of GeO2— SiO2, and has a content of 0.5 to 90 mol% of GeO2. The resulting form is a thin film that is produced via the high-frequency sputtering method in an argon atmosphere or argon-oxygen mixed atmosphere with an oxygen content of a maximum of 20 vol%.

Innovative Aluminum Flat Solar Collector

The most important feature of this solar collector is the technical solution where the heat-absorbing surface is the same as the heat-transferring surface, which results in the highest heat performance and efficiency. There is no mediatory unit between the heat-transferring surface of the absorber and the heating agent. That means no galvanic corrosion, which would work as insulation. The main unit of this system is the hot-pressed and uniquely alloyed aluminum plate profile, designed especially for this purpose. In the profile, shallow channels for liquid are formed and they are fastened to each other in parallel at a certain distance. The tips of the profiles are led in to the distributing or collecting pipes supplying them with an ideal capacity of 1.7 liters and the two necessary inputs and outputs.
