Alternating-Composition Layered Ceramic Barrier Coatings
Date added: 07/01/2008 |
Advanced ceramic thermal and environmental barrier coatings (T/EBCs) with a novel Alternating
Composition Layered Coating concept have been developed by introducing low thermal stress, strain-tolerant, and chemically compatible interface sublayers between the high thermal expansion top oxide layer and the low thermal expansion silicate EBC and ceramic substrate. The novel inter-layered T/EBC system is a significant material
technology advance for future higher fuel efficiency and lower emission gas turbine engines. |

Composite Cathodes for Dual-Rate Li- Ion Batteries
Date added: 06/01/2008 |
In this technology, a cathode structure has been created that contains a mix of both very high power density and very high energy density materials (which have low power density). The result is a battery cell that can provide both high specific energy at low rates |

Special Polymer/Carbon Composite Films for Detecting SO2
Date added: 06/01/2008 |
We have developed new polymer-based sensors to detect sulfur dioxide (SO2) at parts per-million (ppm) concentration ranges, based on chemical understanding and supported by first principles theoretical calculations. These novel polymeric sensors have been successfully tested (operated and regenerated) to detect SO2 as low as 1 ppm concentration levels, |

Chemical Passivation of Li + -Conducting Solid Electrolytes
Date added: 06/01/2008 |
We have demonstrated a process to passivate high conductivity (but highly lithium reactive) commercially available solid electrolytes with a thin film of lithium phosphorous oxynitride (LiPON). This LiPON film protects the solid electrolyte from deleterious lithium reaction while maintaining the high conductivity of the plate. |

Date added: 05/01/2008 |
Work is currently being performed at NASA Ames Research Center on development of a durable, oxidation-resistant reusable acreage foam TPS, with low-to-moderate density
and temperature capability comparable to that of the carbon systems (reusable at 3,000 °F) with application of a suitable coating. This foam may also be incorporated as an on-orbit repair material. Other potential applications for this material include catalyst supports and filters. |

Photochemically Synthesized Polyimides
hot!
Date added: 04/01/2008 |
A novel monomer system for preparing polyimides has been developed. Self-polymerization of an A-B type monomer, based on Diels-Alder trapping of a photochemically generated o-quinodimethane intermediate, results in polymer materials. The photo-reactive monomers contain both o-methylbenzophenones and dienophiles, allowing formulations of one monomer to successfully prepare polymers. Polymerization may be accomplished in dilute and concentrated solutions as well as in neat form. |
