Ka-Band Radar Terminal Descent Sensor
Ka-Band Radar Terminal Descent Sensor hot!
Date added: 10/01/2007
The Jet Propulsion Laboratory-developed radar altimeter/velocimeter improves the accuracy of velocity sensing by more than an order of magnitude when compared to existing sensors. Further, the radar "terminal descent sensor" uses a millimeter-wave center frequency to eliminate angle-of-arrival errors that can result in large velocity errors over inhomogeneous terrain.

Improved Sensing Coils for SQUIDS
Improved Sensing Coils for SQUIDS
Date added: 10/01/2007
An immediate application of the suggested technique is to sense coils of low-field Magnetic Resonance Imaging systems, Magnetic Encephalography systems, and other similar biological magnetic probes. Immediate sensitivity improvement of ~50% and corresponding two-fold imaging time reduction is possible in some configurations.

WGM-Resonator/Tapered-Waveguide White-Light Sensor Optics
WGM-Resonator/Tapered-Waveguide White-Light Sensor Optics
Date added: 10/01/2007
Searching for the compact sensors of high sensitivity led to gallery-mode-resonator (WGMR) based sensors. Resonator's usage takes fixed critical optical coupling, stable narrowband laser, mode locking. The Bessel beam technique removes all resonance related problems, conserving all advantages.

CO2-Reduction Primary Cell for Use on Venus
CO2-Reduction Primary Cell for Use on Venus hot!
Date added: 10/01/2007
A novel high-energy primary battery for Venus landing missions is proposed. This battery has potentially five to ten times the specific energy of conventional high temperature batteries.

Resonant Tunneling Spin Pump
Resonant Tunneling Spin Pump
Date added: 10/01/2007
A novel way was developed for constructing a electron spin-polarizer using semiconductor heterostructures. The method does not require: (1) magnetic material,(2)magnetic field, (3) light source.

Robust Mapping of Incoherent Fiber-Optic Bundles
Robust Mapping of Incoherent Fiber-Optic Bundles
Date added: 09/01/2007
A series of custom designed digital signal processing algorithms is used to build a spatial transform matrix for real fiber position (incoherent) to virtual fiber position (digital coherent imaging). These algorithms are integrated with a specific processing and visualization computer processor.

Photometric Calibration of Consumer Video Cameras
Photometric Calibration of Consumer Video Cameras hot!
Date added: 09/01/2007
Consumer video cameras have not traditionally been useful for photometric measurements due to their limited dynamic range and non-linearity. This innovation overcomes the saturation (exceeding the dynamic range) of consumer video cameras by a combination of calibration hardware and algorithms.

Procedures for Tuning a Multiresonator Photonic Filter
Procedures for Tuning a Multiresonator Photonic Filter hot!
Date added: 09/01/2007
An algorithm is used for tuning multiresonator photonic filters.

Preventing Raman Lasing in High-Q WGM Resonators
Preventing Raman Lasing in High-Q WGM Resonators hot!
Date added: 09/01/2007
In this resonator Q-factor at Raman lasing wavelength will be suppressed and threshold will be Q^2 times higher than in regular resonator. Simultaneously at the pump frequency the cavity remains single mode.

Amplified Thermionic Cooling Using Arrays of Nanowires
Amplified Thermionic Cooling Using Arrays of Nanowires hot!
Date added: 09/01/2007
Our concept is to use thermionic emission from bundle of metal nanowires for demonstrating an ultra-miniaturized cooling device, without involving Joule heating or using fluidic components.
