University of Wisconsin-Madison researchers have come one step closer to making fusion energy possible by showing that their magnetic plasma chamber, called a stellarator, can overcome a major barrier in plasma research by retaining the needed temperature for fusion to be possible. Past stellarators lose too much energy to reach the high temperatures needed for fusion.

It is the stellarator’s unique shape that directs the strength of the magnetic field, confining the plasma in a way that helps it retain energy. The design incorporates features of another plasma device, called a tokamak, to provide a stable magnetic field.
