This article explains oscilloscope waveform measurements, measurement accuracy, and provides information on how to achieve the most accurate measurements using digital oscilloscopes. Oscilloscopes can provide users with detailed information about waveform behavior by calculating vertical-axis (voltage), horizontal-axis (time), and frequency domain parameters of acquired waveforms. This article describes each category of measurements in detail. Vertical-axis measurements include: max and min, peak-to-peak, RMS, and average voltage levels. Horizontal-axis measurements include: frequency, period, rise and fall times, and duty cycle. Frequency measurements include the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT); providing insight into the frequency content of acquired waveforms. |
