Disposable MEMS Market Growing, Study Says

The market for microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) used as pressure sensors in medical electronics is likely to grow by 7 percent this year, aided by the use of disposable devices as well as respiratory monitoring, according to iSuppli, El Segundo, CA, a global leader in technology value chain research and advisory services, now part of IHS. Their report says revenue for pressure sensors in medical electronics applications will reach $137.6 million in 2012, and growth will be steady over the next few years, with revenue projected to reach $186.7 million by 2016.

The last few years have seen the development of larger, higher power, higher luminescence light-emitting diode (LED) chips. Prior to this, LEDs were typically 0.020" x 0.020", came in various colors and were used primarily as optical indicators. This new breed of LEDs come in various colors, including white and UV, are typically 0.040" x 0.040" and are designed to provide high intensity light for illumination applications. Individually packaged versions of these LEDs are being used in arrays and clusters to replace standard incandescent and compact fluorescent light bulbs and are much more efficient at converting electrical power into usable optical power.

Ultra-Sensitive Biosensor for Medical Diagnostics

This device may enable miniaturization and new point-of-care applications in doctors' offices.

Researchers have created an ultrasensitive biosensor that could open up new opportunities for early detection of cancer and “personalized medicine” tailored to the specific biochemistry of individual patients. The device, which could be several hundred times more sensitive than other biosensors, combines the attributes of two distinctly different types of sensors, said Muhammad A. Alam, a Purdue Uni versity professor of electrical and computer engineering.

These panel-mount connectors offer options for connecting inside the instrument, including P.C. board lead frames and direct wiring. Highly rugged and compact designs using aluminum alloy 6061 shells with nickel plating offer contact counts from 9 to 51 positions. Operating temperature ranges from -55 to 125 °C.
