Product of the Month: December 2014

COMSOL, Burlington, MA, announced COMSOL Multiphysics® software version 5.0 that features product updates, three new add-on products, and the new Application Builder. The Application Builder lets users build applications for use by engineering and manufacturing departments, expanding accessibility to the expertise and to simulation solutions. The Application Builder enables engineers to make available an easy-to-use application based on their COMSOL Multiphysics model. Included with the Windows® operating system version of COMSOL Multiphysics® 5.0, the Application Builder provides tools needed to build and run simulation apps. Any COMSOL Multiphysics model can be turned into an application with its own interface using the tools provided with the Application Builder desktop environment. Other features include the Form Editor, in which the user interface layout can be designed, and the Methods Editor for implementing customized commands. The new version also includes a Ray Optics Module, Design Module, and LiveLinkTM for Revit®.

Optical Encoders

Avago Technologies (San Jose, CA) announced the AEDR-87xx series of 3-channel reflective optical encoder devices for use in low-power miniaturized motion control systems such as stepper motors, electrical actuators, piezoelectric drives, and portable medical appliances. The devices feature encoding resolution up to 318 lines per inch (LPI), support for 3.3V and 5V supply voltage for low-power applications, and dual analog outputs interfacing directly with an external interpolator for high-precision motion control measurements. The encoders feature three channel outputs including one index digital output; a built-in interpolator for 4x, 8x, and 16x interpolation; built-in automatic LED current regulation; encoding resolution of 318 LPI (up to 1.25 um pitch); and operating temperature range from -20 to +85 °C.

Motor Drive Controllers

ElectroCraft (Dover, NH) released the PRO Series integrated motor drive controllers that include brushless motor drives, stepper motor variants, and linear actuators, all incorporating a fully integrated drive with the PRO Series advanced control and sequencing functionality. Each includes closed-loop control, a fully programmable digital sequence engine, fully configurable analog and digital I/O, and deterministic real-time communications. These enable any motor drive to serve as either a standalone control solution or part of an integrated multi-axis system. The controllers are pre-configured, and menu-driven configuration tools allow users to set up systems quickly. They are available in a variety of configuration and encoder options.

Human-Machine Interface

Mitsubishi Electric Automation (Vernon Hills, IL) introduced the GOT2000 Series human machine interface (HMI) that monitors and controls machine components with a graphical touchscreen. It allows operators to interact with the HMI similarly to a tablet or smartphone with intuitive gestures and multi-touch actions. The HMI acts as a seamless gateway to industrial automation devices, including programmable logic controllers (PLC), variable frequency drives, servos, and temperature controllers. The display is designed to optimize operator control and monitoring of device and line status.

Shaft Grounding Ring

Electro Static Technology (Mechanic Falls, ME) offers the AEGIS® iPRO-MR ring that combines shaft voltage bearing protection with continuous monitoring of shaft voltage levels from a remote location in real time. It is an AEGIS® Shaft Grounding Ring and a shaft monitoring ring in one for large motors and generators in critical applications. The ring is suited for the protection of motors in remote locations that cannot be easily monitored or maintained. It is available in a range of sizes to accommodate even the largest motor shaft diameter, and comes in mating halves to facilitate field retrofits on coupled equipment.

Force Transducers

HBM (Marlborough, MA) introduced the C10 line of compressive force transducers. The stainless steel version is hermetically sealed, and they have an IP68 rating for use in environments where dirt and moisture can be a problem. The C10 is available with various nominal forces ranging from 2.5 kN to 1 MN, in accuracy classes ranging from 0.03 to 0.06. Despite the high output signal (up to 4 mV/V), C10 transducers have a very low temperature coefficient. A variety of options is available, including a double-bridge option, TEDS transducer electronic data sheets, and different cables and connectors, for a total of 2,304 different configurations. Applications range from propulsion testing, to end-of-line testing, to drop testing and anywhere precision force in harsh environments is required.
