DualHead2Go™

Matrox Graphics, Montreal, Canada, has introduced DualHead2Go™, an external device that connects to the monitor connector of a computer to add support for an extra monitor. The operating system treats the device like a monitor, supporting resolutions twice as wide as standard resolutions. The device divides the monitor output from the computer into two separate displays, one showing the left half of the monitor, and the other showing the right half. Device setup does not require opening a computer, inserting parts, or replacing hardware or software. Instead, it uses a computer's existing graphics hardware and software for 2D, 3D, and video acceleration. Because it is an external upgrade, it can be used to add an extra display to closed, validated, mission-critical systems, or to computers with no available expansion slots. It includes support for Windows® 2000 and XP, and is compatible with a range of laptops and other systems.

Adobe® Acrobat® 3D

Adobe Systems, San Jose, CA, has released Adobe® Acrobat® 3D that enables engineers to publish and share 3D design information from major CAD applications with virtually any computer user, allowing collaboration within design and manufacturing teams. Users can convert 3D designs from a number of proprietary CAD formats into cross-platform, secure Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) files. When enabled by Acrobat 3D, suppliers, partners, clients, and other team members can use the free Adobe Reader® 7.0 software to review and add comments directly onto interactive 3D objects embedded within PDF files. The original CAD application is not required. Acrobat 3D lets users convert virtually any document, such as e-mail or spreadsheets, into PDF files. Users can also insert 3D CAD designs into Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files and, using Acrobat 3D, convert them to PDF. The software also enables users to publish technical documents as PDF files with interactive 3D illustrations.

RFC series of non-contact rotary sensors

Novotechnik U.S., Southborough, MA, has introduced the RFC series of non-contact rotary sensors based on magnetic field technology that have no moving or mechanical parts attached to wear or break. A magnetic assembly affixed to the shaft is physically separated from the sensor with an embedded integrated circuit that provides analog output in the calculated angle range of 30 to 360° in 10° steps. The housing is made of a high-grade, temperature-resistant plastic, and elongated slots are used for mounting. The sensor is sealed to Class IP 69, and resists dirt and dampness. Electrical connections are made via a shielded cable with three lead wires; a redundant output is available with six leads. The sensors provide 12-bit resolution, independent linearity to 0.5% of measurement range, and repeatability of <0.03%. It is available with two voltage output options and has an operating temperature range from -40 to 125°C

EZ-ZONE™ ST

Watlow, St. Louis, MO, has introduced the EZ-ZONE™ ST integrated control loop that integrates temperature control, power control, safety shutdown, and power disconnect in a single package. The system features a PID temperature controller already connected to a high-amperage solid-state relay with the option of adding a properly sized heat sink, current measurement, an over/under temperature limit, a definite purpose mechanical contactor, and digital communications. A remote user interface also can be added. The control loop is modular and scaleable, allowing users to choose only the components they need. The system can be stacked into multiple configurations, and features back-panel or DIN rail mounting. Other features are a touch-safe package and ±0.1 percent temperature accuracy. The system can be used in temperature control applications in plastics processing, packaging, semiconductor processing, analytical instrumentation, and general equipment.

Autodesk Inventor 11 3D

Autodesk, San Rafael, CA, has announced Autodesk Inventor 11 3D mechanical CAD software that provides an integrated set of tools for 3D design and documentation. The new release features "functional design," which enables users to create designs based on the functional requirements of a product before committing to complex model geometry. Users begin with a symbolic representation of the product and enter the requirements in order to test, simulate, and validate the design, rather than entering the geometric dimensions of its parts. Other new features include Dynamic Simulation, which lets designers determine how effectively a machine will perform under real-world conditions; Large Assembly Management to configure how much model data is loaded into memory; Assembly Configurations for designing and documenting families of related products in a single assembly file; and Advanced Shape Description for creating cast and molded parts.
