MP3 Audio DSP Microcontroller

VLSI Solution (Tampere, Finland) has introduced the VS1010 MP3 Audio DSP Microcontroller, a highly integrated all-in-one MP3 player system-on-a-chip. VS1010's I/O system includes support for Hi-speed USB (both host and device operations are supported), SD/SDHC cards, 2xSPI, MEMS microphones, S/PDIF, I2S, 2xUART, RTC clock, SAR inputs, a PWM output, GPIOs. It also contains a 24-bit stereo DAC and an integrated earphone amplifier with a dynamic range of 100 dB(A). VS1010 runs VLSI Solution's VSOS operating system. For those who want to program the VS1010, VLSI Solution's Integrated Development Environment VSIDE is available for free.

32-Bit MCUs

Mouser Electronics, Inc. (Mansfield, TX) is now stocking the MSP432 mixed-signal microcontrollers from Texas Instruments (TI). TI’s MSP432 microcontrollers are based on a powerful, 32-bit ARM® Cortex®‑M4F core with a floating point unit and memory protection management. The microcontroller includes two 16-bit timers, four 32-bit timers, and a 14-bit analog to digital converter (ADC) that converts at 1MSPS. The microcontroller also boasts four high-drive input and output (I/O) pins that can support up to 20mA. The microcontrollers support capacitive touch capability, as well as digital glitch filtering on some I/O pins.

Modeling and Analysis Software

COMSOL (Burlington, MA) announced updates to COMSOL Multiphysics® modeling and simulation software that include a Rotordynamics Module. The module is designed to help engineers analyze vibrations due to centrifugal forces and other gyroscopic effects in rotating machinery. The module helps confirm that rotor vibrations are contained within acceptable design limits by evaluating critical speed, whirl, and bearings. Users can post-process their results directly within the software and present their analysis results as Campbell diagrams, modal orbits, harmonic orbits, waterfall plots, and whirl plots.

Foundry Robot

ABB Robotics (Auburn Hills, MI) introduced the IRB 1200 Foundry Plus 2 robot for material handling and machine tending. The compact foundry robot features the company’s optional protection system so it resists corrosion and withstands harsh environments, including high-pressure steam washing. The robot is IP66/67-compliant from base to wrist, which means its electrical compartments are sealed against liquid and solid contaminants. It is also available with cleanroom protection. The robot comes in two variants — the 700-mm-reach variant can carry a payload of up to 7 kg, while the longer-reach 900-mm variant can carry up to 5 kg of payload.

Robot Programming Software

With the RISE interactive graphical interface from Hypertherm (Hanover, NH), users control the Robotmaster V6 programming software from within a robot simulation environment. Users can modify a robot’s positions and trajectories by clicking and dragging the robot’s arm, axes, tools, or the workpiece. To manage transition moves between operations, users can jog the robot joint-by-joint; move the robot on the workpiece or tool frames; and change the base, elbow, or wrist configurations. The workspace analysis feature is fully integrated into RISE to help position parts. Visualization of the robot’s reach limits, coupled with dynamic recalculation, shows the impact of changes made on all operations. Process parameters can be created, modified, and controlled by the user for the entire program, specific operations, or at select points.

Digital Piezo Controller

PI (Physik Instrumente) L.P. (Auburn, MA) announced a 4-channel version of the E- 727 digital piezo controller that is designed for multi-axis nanopositioning applications. The controller features a choice of digital high-speed interfaces such as SPI, Ethernet, and USB (and traditional RS-232), and provides three additional high-resolution analog inputs. Other features are low-noise 20-bit DAC and ADC converters, four integrated piezo power amplifiers with an output range of -30 to +130V, and circuitry for capacitive feedback sensors, piezoresistive sensors, and traditional strain gauges. The digital servo provides PID control with two programmable notch filters for higher bandwidth by suppression of mechanical system resonances. A data recorder for high-speed tracing, ID chip compatibility for quick startup, and exchange of system components without recalibration are provided.
