Gearheads

The LP+/LPB+ Value Line series of gear-heads from alpha gear drives (Bartlett, IL) offer a lubrication concept that makes them maintenance-free. The LPB+ offers the option of adding an integrated geared pulley drive system. The belt pulley eliminates the need for a right-angle gearbox, couplings, and/or additional bearings. At full load, the gear reducers achieve more than 95% efficiency; the two-stage reducer restricts torsional backlash to less that 10 arcminutes, while the single-stage version operates at under 8 arcminutes.

Rotary Encoders

Pepperl+Fuchs (Twinsburg, OH) has introduced the 40-mm-diameter, IP54-protected TVI401 Series incremental rotary encoders capable of providing pulse outputs of up to 1024 ppr. Offering a tangential cable outlet for buckle-free connection, the encoders operate at 4.75 to 30 VDC with short-circuit-proof, push-pull output, or 5 VDC operation with RS-422 functionality. The encoders use Opto-ASIC technology and can accept heavy loads via a loadable metal disk.

Servo Drives

Parker Hannifin’s Electromechanical Automation Div. (Rohnert Park, CA) offers high-power Compax3 all-digital servo drives, available with current output to 10A and 15A RMS. The drives feature auto-tuning, internal function generator on all units, and support for Stegmann single- and multi-turn absolute encoders. All Compax3 drives ship with the Compax3 ServoManager software package for commissioning the drive. The ServoManager program provides diagnostic screens, graphical tuning utilities, an OS download tool, HTML Help tools, an S-curve acceleration calculator, and a motor configuration wizard to be used with non-Parker motors.

Servo Controller/Driver

QuickSilver Controls (San Dimas, CA) has added multi-thread capability to its SilverDust servo controllers/drivers for NEMA 17 and 23 frame motors. Users can execute two programs simultaneously in the same controller for motion applications where the servo controller is used as the main logic controller. One thread can be used to execute motion-oriented programs, while the other is dedicated to I/O processing. Either thread can change position or velocity by modifying the respective registers. With both program threads running, execute time is 240 microseconds. The 8-kHz servo loop, 1-MB CANopen, and 230-KB serial channels execute as normal.

CAN Card

The Model CAN-PCI-02 Control Area Network (CAN) card from Copley Controls Corp. (Canton, MA) provides an interface between the company’s distributed motion control software and its CANopen servo and stepper drives. It facilitates plug-and-play CANopen operation and is PCI compliant. Compatible with 3.3V and 5VDC environments, the card’s onboard microcontroller offloads processing tasks from the host computer. The card employs high-speed ISO 11898 driver circuits for CAN bus bit rates to 1 Mbit/sec, and provides dual isolated channels and PCI 32-bit interface. The card’s two independent CAN ports are isolated for noise immunity.

Linear Bushing

THK America (Schaumburg, IL) has introduced a self-adjusting power linear bushing with cages engineered of resin that continually lubricates the rolling elements. The bushing also features a hardened steel ball plate with a ground groove that is slightly larger than the ball, which results in increased contact area between the ball and the ball plate. The ball retainer and outer sleeve are made of a lightweight, low-friction, wear-resistant synthetic polymer, allowing for quiet operation. The convex shape of the ball plate provides a pivot point at the center, which permits self-adjustment up to 0.5°.

Piston Pumps

The Series 2665/2685 WOB-L piston pumps by Thomas Products Div. (Sheboygan, WI) incorporates epoxy-coated head and valve plates for exterior corrosion protection, aluminum construction, and a Teflon piston seal that remains flexible even in cold. The pumps are intended for use where fan guards are not required; Series 2685 pumps include a stainless steel fan guard. Oil-less, non-lube pistons and cylinders prevent airflow contamination, while twin fans provide cooling of the motor and cylinder. All series 2265/2685 pumps provide up to 100 psi of pressure, and a pressure relief valve is also included. Thermally protected AC motors are of ultra-reliable permanent split capacitor design. Maximum flow for pumps equipped with 115 VAC 60 Hz single phase motors is rated at 3.68 CFM; maximum flow for pumps equipped with 220-240 VAC 50 Hz single phase motors is 3.23 CFM.
