Product of the Month: Transient Absorption Spectrometer

Designed for the study of ultrafast phenomena such as electronic deactivation, intersystem crossing, vibrational relaxation, internal conversion, and intra-molecular electron transfer, Newport Corp.’s (Irvine, CA) Helios is a pump-probe transient absorption spectrometer used to monitor extremely short-lived optically absorbing states. The experimental time window ranges from 150 fs to 3.2 ns, covering wavelengths of 350 to 1600 nm. The system is completely turnkey, including all of the optics, optomechanics, the delay line, spectrometer in the optical unit, and a PC containing the data acquisition hardware and software. The system is designed to work with an amplified Ti:Sapphire femtosecond laser. The system captures the spectral and kinetic data required for investigating photoexcitation events on the sub-picosecond and longer timescale.

Fiber Laser

Aculight (Bothell, WA) built the polarized Picasso Model PF1550PM-30 fiber laser for military and commercial applications. The fiber laser produces 4- to 6-ns pulses at repetition rates from 50 kHz to 200 kHz with 1-W average output power. It generates maximum pulse energy of 20 μJ at 50 kHz. The unit’s 1.54-μm output is diffraction limited. The 1-μm version, Picasso Model PF1060-40, generates 3- to 5-ns pulses at repetition rates between 100 kHz and 1 MHz. It produces up to 10 W of average power at a repetition rate of 1 MHz and maximum peak powers of 30 kW. The unit’s output is less than 1.4 times the diffraction limit. All Picasso units measure just 3.5 × 11 × 13" and weigh 16 pounds or less.

Mini Spectrometer

Hamamatsu Corp.’s (Bridgewater, NJ) C10082MD is a compact spectrometer unit that is designed for spectral evaluation of light sources, industrial color measurement, and other applications. Its CMOS linear image sensor covers a wide spectral response range from 200 nm to 800 nm. Light is directed into the unit through a SMA optical fiber connector. Inside the unit, high throughput is achieved due to a high-quality quartz transmission grating. There are no moving parts inside the C10082MD, which contributes to measurement stability. To ensure ease of installation, the C10082MD is designed with a USB port, which means that a single cable connection to a computer will handle both data transfer and power supply.

Short-Pulse Excimer Laser

Photon Machines (San Diego, CA) has introduced the ATLEX Series of excimer lasers, featuring a pre-ionization technique that delivers short pulse widths, high peak-power densities, and flat beams for laser micromachining. The laser was built with all-metal-ceramic tube construction with automatic gas filling and user-replaceable optics that increase product lifetimes and reduce cost of ownership. ATLEX lasers are air-cooled and capable of continuous operation at rates up to 500 pulses per second. A built-in energy detector enables closed-loop stabilization that maintains the energy output entered by the operator. A handheld controller and computer interface are standard features. Available wavelengths include 157, 193, 248, 308, and 351 nm. Applications include TOF, spectroscopy, test instrumentation, micromachining, microfluidics, and LIGA.

Multi-Channel Framing Camera

The SIM Multi-Channel Framing Camera from Specialised Imaging Ltd. (Tring, Herts, UK) provides the choice of 4, 6, 8, or 16 separate optical channels. Effects such as parallax and shading are eliminated and the spatial resolution of >50 lp/mm is the same frame to frame and in both axes. The camera also offers users the ability to mount individual filters on each optical channel. Referenced to a 200-MHz quartz crystal clock, the SIM is capable of data acquisition rates of up to 200 million fps for all 16 channels, providing low nanosecond exposures necessary for the temporal dissection of very fast phenomena such as laser ablation, high-voltage breakdown, combustion research, fluorescence decay, crack propagation, impact mechanics, and nanotechnology applications. The 8-channel version of this new system provides a unique supplementary port allowing secondary instruments (e.g., high-speed video, time-resolved spectrometer, or streak cameras) to share the same optical axis as the framing channels.

LEDs

OSRAM Opto Semiconductors’ (San Jose, CA) Golden DRAGON LEDs offer bright daytime running light and low energy consumption. While thin-film technology ensures that almost all the light produced in the semiconductor chip is at the surface, a low forward voltage reduces the amount of power the LED needs. The company has added its ARGUS lens system from radial light-emitting diodes and adapted it to SMT LEDs (Surface Mounted Technology) such as the Golden DRAGON ARGUS. All four LED chips are manufactured in thin-film technology and have a correspondingly high luminous efficacy. Displays backlit with OSRAM LEDs do not need active cooling because the system does not exceed 60 °C. The LEDs contain no lead or mercury and comply with RoHS guidelines. They are also vibration-proof and shockproof and have a life of more than 50,000 hours.

Violet Laser Diode

Photonic Products (Hertsfordshire, UK) offers a lead-free, blue-violet wavelength (405 nm) laser diode from Sanyo, the DL-5146-152 405 nm. The device is a 35-mW CW, (50-mW pulsed) laser diode that incorporates an internal monitor photodiode to control device output. Designed for applications where a stable, controlled output is critical, such as biomedical instrumentation, medical imaging, fluorescence sensing, spectroscopy, and microscopy, the DL-5146-152 comes in a 5.6-mm package with M-type common cathode pin configuration. The DL-5146-152 laser diode has a low threshold current of 38 mA, typical operating current of 75 mA, operating voltage of 5.6 V, threshold voltage of 4.8 V, monitoring output current of 0.2 mA, laser reverse voltage of 2 V and differential efficiency of 0.9 mW/mA at a visible wavelength of 405 nm. The operating temperature range is 0 °C to +60 °C.
