Motion Controller

PI L.P. (Auburn, MA) introduced the E-755 NEXLINE® ultra-high-resolution motion controller that is designed to drive NEXLINE® linear motor actuators, enabling the combination of long travel ranges and picometer resolution. The E-755 features 32-bit digital filters, 24-bit DAC resolution, integrated piezo amplifiers, fully programmable low-pass and notch filters, and non-volatile user settings and last-position data. It can be run in closed-loop and open-loop mode and in closed-loop operation linearity is achieved by polynomial linearization. The controller comes with a software package that includes LabVIEW drivers for automation of nanopositioning tasks. The low-noise, 24-bit D/A converters enable the controllers to provide picometer-level resolution in the short-range/dithering mode supported by the actuators.

Single-Axis Controller

The microMAXR from Agile Systems (Waterloo, ON, Canada) is a single-axis controller that integrates motion control, servo amplifier, networking capabilities, and user I/O in a compact package. The microMAXR allows users to incorporate multiple controllers using a traditional connector or a backplane version that plugs into the user’s printed circuit board. The controller has Agile’s Peer to Peer network architecture, allowing the user to create individual distributed programs to interact with each other. With this control network scheme, register values are exchanged between controllers in a synchronized fashion, ensuring motion functions associated with each exchanged register value are executed at a defined point in time and synchronized between all axes in the system. Peer to Peer networking of motion tasks reduces the bandwidth requirement of the network connection between machine control and the motion system.

Encoder Protocol

The BiSS™ Model C encoder protocol from Dynapar (Gurnee, IL) provides bidirectional communication between an encoder and a motor drive controller. Secondary data such as temperature, acceleration, alarm description, and safety information can be communicated without the need to stop collecting position data. The protocol can read/write data to the controller without switching from sensing mode to read/write mode, enabling the sensor to send secondary data along with position data in a real-time data stream.

Phantom® V7.3

Vision Research, Wayne, NJ, has introduced an upgraded version of the Phantom® V7.3 digital high-speed camera that allows users to capture 500,000 pictures per second. The camera has two operating modes. In standard mode, users can capture images between 6,700 frames per second (fps) and 190,000 fps, and can adjust exposure programmable to 1/framerate. In turbo mode, the camera acquires images up to 500,000 fps at a resolution of 32×16 and with a fixed 1-microsecond exposure time. Users can switch between modes by using Phantom software that comes with the camera. Other features includue standard 8-bit image depth, with 14-bit image depth optional; 4800 ISO/ASA monochrome or 1200 ISO/ASA color sensitivity equivalency; global on-chip shuttering to 1 microsecond; auto exposure control; up to 16 GB DRAM, and 24 GB non-volatile flash memory; continuous video output; and Gigabit Ethernet or RS-232 control.
