Ti:Sapphire Laser

Spectra-Physics’ (Mountain View, CA) newest addition to the Mai Tai Ti:Sapphire laser product line delivers more than 2.5 W of average power and is now available with a 700-1020 nm tuning range. The laser is fully computer controlled and produces 100 femtosecond pulses. With a broader tuning range, the laser enables two-photon excitation of all commonly used fluorophores, including the fluorescent proteins. The high power makes the laser applicable for other non-linear spectroscopy applications where pulse energy is important, while enabling deeper tissue penetration in biophotonics applications. Each Mai Tai laser features automated wavelength tuning for real-time excitation profiling, as well as pointing stability that eliminates the need to realign the experimental setup.

Medical CCD Camera

Designed for medical applications, the TrueFrame FT50M CCD image sensor from DALSA (Waterloo, ON, Canada) comes in a 1k × 1k-pixel array with 5.6 × 5.6-μm square pixels. Combined with high linear dynamic range of 67 dB, high sensitivity, and vertical anti-blooming, the camera has high-contrast and greater detail retention in both dark and light areas of images. The camera operates at up to 100 fps and comes in a ½" size, delivering all of the imaging performance of a traditional 2⁄3" sensor. This monochrome frame transfer image sensor has an optical size of 5.7 × 5.7 mm and is designed to meet the needs of the medical and industrial markets in applications such as medical X-ray imaging, digital microscopy, and industrial inspection.

Material-Testing Tribometers

Micro Photonics (Irvine, CA) has introduced the Standard Pin-On-Disk and High Load Tribometers. Developed for high-temperature operations, high loads, and high rotational speeds up to 6000 rpm, the tribometer is equipped with a Plexiglas enclosure for testing under varying degrees of humidity and compositions. The high-load instrument allows tests up to 300N (500N optional) with a minimum load of 1N. Tests are compatible with ASTM G99 & DIN 50324 standards. The instruments are available with a white-light chromatic aberration sensor for direct measurement of wear track displacement with nanometer resolution, and a low-pressure pulverization module, where air is compressed and filtered, then mixed with a liquid to create a uniform spray that can be directed to the appropriate test zone. Users with an existing micromeasure profiler can use the chromatic sensor in conjunction with the tribometer for real-time profilometry measurement of the wear track.

Infrared Camera

The fourth generation of Cedip Infrared Systems’ (Croissy, Beaubourg, France) JADE IR cameras includes enhanced sensitivity (< 20 mK), faster frame rate, and a new windowing mode. The frame rate can be changed with a step resolution of 1 Hz up to 250 Hz at full frame, and up to 25,000 Hz in sub arrays windowing mode. Using high quantum efficiency, thermoelectrically cooled MCT, and InSb focal plane array detectors, the cameras are sensitive to wavelengths throughout the infrared spectrum, including SWIR (0.8-2.5 μm), MWIR (3-5 μm), and LWIR (8-12 μm). The camera sensor array contains 320 × 256 sensing elements, with 14-bit dynamic range. A range of accessories, software tools, and drivers enables use of the camera by system integrators.

Solid State Laser

The Kyma line of solid state lasers from Melles Griot (Carlsbad, CA) offers improved stability and performance by requiring fewer parts than diode pumped solid state (DPSS) lasers. Kyma technology supports wavelengths from the deep blue to the red. The first product in the Kyma line is the Kyma 488, which is available with 10 and 20 mW of output power at 488.0 nm, a critical wavelength for many biomedical and life science applications. The output beam is nearly circular (less than 1.1:1 aspect ratio), linearly polarized, and has an M2 factor of less than 1.2. The compact, conduction-cooled laser head incorporates thermoelectric cooling and automatic power control for stable, long-term operation and beam-pointing stability. Long-term power drift is less than 5 percent during a 24-hour period. The modular design consumes less than 15 W of wall power.
