Projected Capacitive (PCAP) Touch Panel

(Dallas, TX) has announced the addition of an 18.5-inch projected capacitive (PCAP) touch panel to the Crystal Touch: TRUE Multi-Touch PLUS standard product line. Crystal Touch: TRUE Multi-Touch PLUS panels provide a true multi-touch interface with a pre-integrated, optically bonded, soda-lime cover glass with a decorative black border. The additional layer of glass adds durability and is ready to be incorporated into touch driven devices. The 18.5-inch PCAP touch panel allows for up to 16 simultaneous touches and features the Atmel® maXTouch™ mXT1664S controller. The combination of Ocular's Crystal Touch technology and Atmel's maXTouch line of touchscreen controllers provide a robust and sophisticated touch solution that can identify and disregard unintended touches.

Closed-Loop I2S Audio Amplifiers

Texas Instruments (TI) (Dallas, TX) has introduced a family of four digital-input, closed-loop I2S amplifiers for mid-power stereo audio applications including TVs, soundbars, portable docking stations, Bluetooth® speakers, and aftermarket automotive audio products. The TAS5760xx devices feature high switching frequency, allowing designers to use smaller output filter components to reduce overall solution size and bill of materials (BOM) cost. They stream 20W continuous power per channel without a heatsink, and deliver superior performance specifications, including THD+N of 0.03 percent at 1 W, crosstalk of -92 dB, and 66-uV idle channel noise.

Product of the Month: the MakerBot® Digitizer™ Desktop 3D Scanner

MakerBot, Brooklyn, NY, has introduced the MakerBot® Digitizer™ Desktop 3D Scanner for creating 3D models. The scanner takes a real-life object, scans it using a camera and two lasers, and creates a 3D digital file, without the need for design or 3D software experience. It can be used in an office, manufacturing space, or workshop, and connects to a laptop or computer. The scanner creates a clean, watertight 3D model with two clicks, and generates a 3D digital design file in minutes. It outputs standard 3D design file formats that can be modified or improved in third-party 3D modeling programs. The file can be printed on a MakerBot Replicator 2 Desktop 3D printer, or on other 3D printers. The scanner can digitize physical objects up to 8" in diameter and 8" tall, and weighing up to 6.6 pounds.

Gearboxes

The i-series planetary gearboxes from Groschopp (Sioux Center, IA) are available with AC, PMDC, and brushless motors, and are made of cast aluminum. They are offered with up to three stages of steel cut or optional plastic gears, suitable for both leftand right-hand rotation running, in continuous and intermittent duty operation. The plastic gears can withstand operating temperatures from -15 to 65 °C; the steel gearing can withstand -30 to 140 °C temperatures. Rated at a standard IP54, the gearboxes feature sealed, doubleball output bearings and gaskets between each module to resist grease and dust.

Machine Design Software

CD-adapco (Melville, NY) offers two connected simulation programs, SPEED and STAR-CCM+, for machine design. The SPEED tool is used to design motors, generators, and alternators; STAR-CCM+ is a heat transfer and thermal fluid flow program. Design data is seamlessly transferred between the two programs. The SPEED model is created and solved with static/dynamic analytical analysis. SPEED FE is used to fine-tune the analytical model and calculate the iron losses. The 3D machine geometry is set up in STAR-CCM+, including the end windings creation from SPEED via an xGDF file. Flow heat loss results are transferred from FE analysis to STAR-CCM+ via the SBD-file, and heat losses are mapped automatically. The cooling system, bearing shields, and additional flanges are added via importing from a 3D CAD system. Physics are assigned, and the final solution and post-processing are done in STAR-CCM+.

Electric Actuators

Warner Linear (Belvidere, IL) has announced the ITrack linear actuators for light- and medium-duty applications where parallel motor type actuators won’t fit in limited space requirements. The actuators feature a release clutch that allows the actuator rod to float when power is off. When the clutch is disengaged, much less force is required for manual movement. The clutch also provides overload protection and can be driven through in case of obstruction. The actuators have a load capacity up to 200 pounds, and stroke lengths up to 12". Gaskets are nitrile-impregnated for sealing, and steel components are nitrotec-coated for corrosion resistance. Models feature a ball screw, a steel rod, and are IP66 capable. Operating temperature ranges from -40 °F to 185 °F.
