The Air Bearing Advantage in High-Precision Positioning

All moving objects possess six degrees of freedom — three linear and three rotary. The task of a linear motion guideway is to eliminate, as closely as possible, five of these degrees of freedom, leaving a single rotary or linear axis of motion. Air bearings are the purest and highest-performance means of defining linear or rotary motion, and have substantial advantages over conventional mechanical guideways. These advantages become more pronounced as the desired resolution increases, and many aspects of high-precision positioning are uniquely enhanced when air bearing guideways are chosen.

Non-Contact Transducer

Balluff (Florence, KY) offers the Micropulse™ BIW transducer that uses a patented, pulsed-inductive technology. It features a wear-free, non-contact design that can be used where linear pots are used, such as plastic injection molding machines, blow molding machines, stamping presses, and hydraulic motion bases. The transducer is available with an analog 0 to 10V or -10 to +10V output. It has a >20 kHz update rate, non-linearity of ±0.02%, and resolution to 5 microns. It is available in stroke lengths from 75 to 750 mm.

Accelerometers

Wilcoxon Research (Gaithersburg, MD) has introduced the 788A accelerometers that feature a sensitivity of 100 mV/g. The accelerometer is a single-axis sensor with an acceleration range of +50 g. High-frequency response measurements up to 10 kHz identify faults and improper machine operation. Typical noise is 4 mg at 100 Hz. The unit operates at temperatures between -50 and 120 °C. Applications include vibration monitoring of fans, motors, pumps, blowers, compressors, chillers, gearboxes, and mixers.

Brushless DC Drive

Performance Motion Devices (Lincoln, MA) has announced the ION™ brushless DC drive, a network-connected motion control drive. The fully enclosed compact module provides network connectivity, power amplification, and motion control, and is available for brushless DC, DC brush, and microstepping motors. The module provides CANbus and serial communications, and accepts commands over the network to control trajectory generation, position loop, and current loop. The brushless DC ION controls a three-phase brushless motor using field-oriented control or sinusoidal commutation, and operates at 40 kHz with an output capability of 500 W.
