Motion Control

Motion and Automation Control

Kollmorgen (Radford, VA) offers the AKD PDMM that combines a multi-axis motion controller, IEC61131-3 soft PLC, EtherCAT® master, and AKD® servo drive in a single, compact package. The system is suited for applications in printing, packaging, converting, and medical, as well as other automation applications where precise synchronization of multiple axes of motion is vital. It is fully programmable through the KAS Integrated Development Environment (KAS IDE), providing an automation solution that is scalable from a single axis up to 128 axes with a single controller. Features include the ability to master seven or more additional axes over an EtherCAT network, plus additional EtherCAT connected devices such as I/O and MODBUS-connected devices such as HMIs. Kollmorgen Automation Suite is a complete machine automation solution comprised of software, motion components, and engineering services. It simulates the machine’s operation in advance of connecting all components.

Rod-Style Actuators

ERD electric cylinders from Tolomatic (Hamel, MN) are available with a reverseparallel motor mount that makes a more compact package. The motor is mounted in parallel with the actuator instead of inline, which reduces the length of the total package and, with the addition of a rear clevis pivot mount, provides greater versatility in mounting the actuator. The ERD is a rod-style electric actuator designed as an alternative to pneumatic cylinders, and as an option for automating manual processes. The products are suitable for product changeovers, pick-and-place, pressing, diverting, and heatstaking/ sonic welding. The actuators can be built in stroke lengths up to 24" (609.6 mm). The cylinders are available in four body sizes that are approximately equivalent to 5/8" (15.9 mm), 1" (25.4 mm), 1.5" (38.1 mm), and 2" (50.8 mm) bore pneumatic cylinders. They are available in stroke lengths from 8 to 24" (203.2 mm to 609.6 mm), and forces up to 500 pounds (2,224 N). They are compatible with most NEMA and metric mount stepper and servo motors.

Linear Positioning Stages

Mini-MAG precision linear positioning stages from Dover (Boxborough, MA) are available with a complete controls package. Users can combine a Mini-MAG linear motor stage with a board-level, single-axis servo drive for integration into a control cabinet, or a Kollmorgen AKD™ servo drive for single- or multi-axis applications with a graphical user interface for setup and programming, and realtime performance feedback. Both options provide Ethernet communication for data acquisition.

Linear Actuator

BEI Kimco Magnetics (Vista, CA) has introduced the Model LA100-93-000A high force linear actuator with a peak force of 500 pounds. It features a continuous force of 292 pounds with 2" total stroke. Other features include semi-housed construction with built-in shaft and bushings that orient the coil assembly concentric to the field assembly. The unit measures 10" in diameter and 9.3" long at mid-stroke. The LA100 is suitable for use in applications that require an actuator force of 500 pounds and high speed.

Compact, Low-Force, Low-Noise Linear Actuator

This actuator has potential uses in military and automotive applications. Actuators are critical to all the robotic and manipulation mechanisms that are used in current and future NASA missions, and are also needed for many other industrial, aeronautical, and space activities. There are many types of actuators that were designed to operate as linear or rotary motors, but there is still a need for low-force, low-noise linear actuators for specialized applications, and the disclosed mechanism addresses this need.

Ultra-Compact Motor Controller

Applications include industrial robotic arms, industrial machinery, and automobiles. This invention is an electronically commutated brushless motor controller that incorporates Hall-array sensing in a small, 42-gram package that provides 4096 absolute counts per motor revolution position sensing. The unit is the size of a miniature hockey puck, and is a 44-pin male connector that provides many I/O channels, including CANbus, RS-232 communications, general-purpose analog and digital I/O (GPIO), analog and digital Hall inputs, DC power input (18–90 VDC, 0–l0 A), three-phase motor outputs, and a strain gauge amplifier.
