Rotary Stages

Aerotech (Pittsburgh, PA) offers the CCS series rotary stages with integrated captured collet chucks that provide automated material handling for a wide range of materials and applications. Collet chucks used with the stages accept C-, D-, or Levin-style collets from machine-tool component suppliers in sizes supporting tube diameters from 0.1 mm to 27 mm. The stages feature a collet-chuck design that allows workpiece advance without manual realignment to compensate for axial tube motion during clamp/unclamp cycles. By moving the taper around the collet instead of drawing the collet into the taper, axial motion of the workpiece is significantly reduced, eliminating the need for part reregistration after tube advancement. The stages use direct-drive brushless motor technology that is optimized for 24/7 production environments, with no brushes and no gear trains or belts.

Spindle Drive

The GP16 precision spindle drive from maxon motor (Fall River, MA) incorporates a spindle combined with a DC motor to transform rotary motion into axial motion. Gearheads, motors, encoders, and controllers are used to drive the spindles. It is available in a metric M6 spindle with a self-locking function, or a 5-mm ball screw for high load capacity and no self-locking feature. A central component is the axial bearing, which must withstand the high tractive and compressive forces of the spindle.

Acceleration Sensor and Gyroscope

Bosch Sensortec (Reutlingen, Germany) has integrated two triaxial MEMS sensors in a single package. The BMI055, a combination of an acceleration sensor and a gyroscope, is an inertial measurement unit for applications with six degrees of freedom (6DoF). The elements — acceleration sensor, gyroscope, and software — are all one piece. Supplied in a LGA 3.0 × 4.5 × 0.95 mm package, the unit features resolution of 16 bits for the gyroscope, and 12 bits for the accelerometer. The measurement range of the sensors is programmable from ±125 °/s to ±2000 °/s for the gyroscope, and ±2 g to ±16 g for the accelerometer. I2C and SPI digital interfaces offer communication options. Along with the unit, a custom software solution combines measurement data of both sensors, providing optimized sets of data for various target applications. In combination with an optional geomagnetic sensor, the software enables the design of 9DoF applications.

Linear Shaft Motor

The S605 linear shaft motor from Nippon Pulse America (Radford, VA) offers up to 3100N of acceleration force and a continuous force of 780N. The motor is designed for industrial applications requiring high force, high precision, energy efficiency, and/or high precision. Available with one of three types of windings (double, triple, and quadruple), the motor has an acceleration force range from 1000N to 3100N, and acceleration current from 34 to 35A. It has a shaft diameter of 60.5 mm, and is available with effective strokes between 200 and 2000 mm. Other features include a non-critical air gap of 1.75 mm, and a rated voltage of 240V. The motor is available in 18 different sizes, ranging from 4 mm to 60.5 mm. It uses all magnetic flux and minimizes heat generation.

Rotary Actuator

Pangolin Laser Systems (Orlando, FL) has introduced the VRAD-1510 low-power rotary actuator based on a dual-coil, segmented stator design. It can be used in electromechanical applications such as automotive, industrial machinery, robotics, HVAC, and valve control. The actuator incorporates a magnetic spring and preloaded ball bearings. The design eliminates the need for mechanical stops on shaft rotation. The coils may be driven in series, in parallel, or separately. The actuator is equipped with front and rear shafts, allowing multiple points of attachment or the use of an encoder or position sensor for closed-loop operation. The stator design uses a series of asymmetrical, interleaved laminations that fit together in a way that prevents the introduction of air gaps to the motor’s magnetic field.

Piezo-Positioning Stage

Piezosystem jena (Hopedale, MA) has introduced the PX 100 CAP piezoelectric nanopositioning stage that features a travel range up to 100 μm of motion in closed-loop mode. A highresolution capacitive feedback sensor is built in. The sensor measures a deviation with sub-nanometer accuracy, and operates in a direct metrology fashion. The stage measures 40 × 40 × 20 mm, and is designed for highprecision positioning of small components such as mirrors or other optical components.

The Vision IsoStation vibration isolation workstation from Newport Corp. (Irvine, CA) provides scientific- grade optical breadboard platforms in sizes from 24 × 24" to 36 × 72". The breadboards feature steel, triple-core-interface honeycomb construction that minimizes static deflection and increases point-loading capability. The platform interface acts as a docking surface, an accessory mount, and a restraint to keep the breadboard on top of the workstation frame. The interface also features float-height indications and frame bubble levels. Integrated leveling feet and casters are standard.
