Machine Design Software

CD-adapco (Melville, NY) offers two connected simulation programs, SPEED and STAR-CCM+, for machine design. The SPEED tool is used to design motors, generators, and alternators; STAR-CCM+ is a heat transfer and thermal fluid flow program. Design data is seamlessly transferred between the two programs. The SPEED model is created and solved with static/dynamic analytical analysis. SPEED FE is used to fine-tune the analytical model and calculate the iron losses. The 3D machine geometry is set up in STAR-CCM+, including the end windings creation from SPEED via an xGDF file. Flow heat loss results are transferred from FE analysis to STAR-CCM+ via the SBD-file, and heat losses are mapped automatically. The cooling system, bearing shields, and additional flanges are added via importing from a 3D CAD system. Physics are assigned, and the final solution and post-processing are done in STAR-CCM+.

Electric Actuators

Warner Linear (Belvidere, IL) has announced the ITrack linear actuators for light- and medium-duty applications where parallel motor type actuators won’t fit in limited space requirements. The actuators feature a release clutch that allows the actuator rod to float when power is off. When the clutch is disengaged, much less force is required for manual movement. The clutch also provides overload protection and can be driven through in case of obstruction. The actuators have a load capacity up to 200 pounds, and stroke lengths up to 12". Gaskets are nitrile-impregnated for sealing, and steel components are nitrotec-coated for corrosion resistance. Models feature a ball screw, a steel rod, and are IP66 capable. Operating temperature ranges from -40 °F to 185 °F.

Applimotion (Loomis, CA) has introduced custom gearmotors for high-torque, low-speed, and low-profile applications. The assemblies combine gearing and direct drive frameless motor kits. The ULT, UTH, and UTS low-profile frameless motors are combined with the appropriate gearing solution. Custom gearmotor assemblies range in size from 25 mm to 800 mm diameters. A 150-mm diameter unit can produce 50 NM of continuous torque and up to 150 NM peak torque.

Stepper Motor Driver

Lin Engineering (Morgan Hill, CA) offers the R1025 stepper motor driver that can be used with stepper motors ranging from NEMA 8 to NEMA 42. The driver is capable of output currents ranging from 0.8 to 10 amps peak while handling 12 to 80VDC of input voltage. With selectable step resolutions from full stepping to 256x microstepping, the driver is capable of stepping a typical 1.8 degree motor over 51,000 steps per revolution. It features a small footprint and accessible mounting holes. The driver includes three selectable damping modes, as well as onboard DIP switches, eliminating the need to connect it to a computer.

DC Accelerometer

Measurement Specialties (Hampton, VA) has introduced a rugged, triaxial DC accelerometer for steady-state, low-g vibration measurements and high-g transient shock measurements. The piezoresistive, MEMSbased Model 3803A provides triaxial measurement under harsh operating conditions. Hermetically sealed in a welded, stainless steel housing, the IP65-rated sensor is used for testing applications in harsh, high-performance installations. The unit is offered in dynamic ranges from ±2 g’s to ±2,000 g’s, and is gas-damped to provide a wide frequency response across all three axes. The unit’s MEMS sensing elements include overrange stops for protection to shock levels greater than 5,000 g.
