The JWST will be placed in a vacuum chamber at Johnson Space Center, and supported by a set of custom vibration isolators.

Electro-Hydraulic Motion Controller for Earthquake Simulation

How do you test the behavior of different soil structures in an earthquake? Obviously, large earthquakes don’t happen often, and they certainly don’t happen on cue. The solution, of course, is to model earthquakes in a laboratory environment. And that’s exactly what is being done by the Center for Geotechnical Modeling at the University of California, Davis. Since it’s not economical to simulate the forces of an earthquake on fullsize soil structures such as one would find beneath a real bridge or large building, physical models of much smaller size are used. In Figure 1, for example, is a model of the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit transbay tube that was recently tested in Davis1.

Rotary Motors Customized for Telescope Spectrometer

SQUIGGLE® custom rotary piezoelectric motors New Scale Technologies Victor, NY 585-924-4450 www.newscaletech.comThe Wide-Field Multi Object Spectrometer (WFMOS) is a ground-based astronomical instrument that is scheduled to be commissioned on the Subaru Telescope on Mauna Kea, Hawaii in 2013. The WFMOS, along with corrective optics, will be mounted in place of the secondary mirror of the telescope. An array of NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s Cobra fiber positioners will feed light from a 1.5-degree field of the sky to a visible spectrometer, for red shift observations of 2,400 cosmological targets simultaneously. The light will be transferred to the spectrograph using 2,400 f/2.4 fibers with 107 μm cores.

The development of new testing methodologies is continuing at a fast pace, aided by innovations in supporting technologies. Computational Fluid Dynamics Aids Aerospace Apps

Just a few years ago, the use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in most aerospace companies was restricted to pure research or troubleshooting problems with existing designs. But in the past few years, newly available CFD tools are fully embedded in the mainstream mechanical design environment and hence much easier, faster and less expensive to use. The trend toward using CFD early stages in the design process has resulted in a large number of new users of this powerful analysis technique. Bell Helicopter technical specialists have developed a set of CFD best practices with the goal of guiding users in following company design guidelines and optimizing the analytical processes. The tools are based on guidelines developed for use by engineers working on propulsion systems. The guidelines are based on the application of Mentor Graphics Mechanical Analysis Division’s FloEFD suite of CFD software used by Bell Helicopter for internal flow simulations.

High torque at low speeds is needed to climb over obstacles, while higher speed operation is needed for cruise speed.
