Optical Filters for Avionics

Precision Glass & Optics (PG&O) (Santa Ana, CA) announces the design and development of custom optical filters for PRP Optoelectronics (Towcester, England), independent manufacturer of LED-based display technology. PG&O provides narrow-cone-angle optical filters for PRP’s custom avionics displays. The specialized thin film filters are integrated into PRP Optoelectronics’ avionics displays to modify the viewing angle and reduce unwanted stray light that would otherwise distract pilot(s) and cockpit crew. The new optical coatings’ operational wavelengths and angle requirements are customized for sensitivity to nighttime lighting.

Photovoltaic Metallization Paste

DuPont Microcircuit Materials (MCM) (Research Triangle Park, NC) has introduced DuPont™ Solamet® PV701 photovoltaic metallization paste, a Metal Wrap Through (MWT) technology for back side interconnected silicon solar cell designs. The product composition specifically enables up to 0.4 percent greater efficiency in MWT cell designs versus standard cell designs. The specialized cell structure transfers the bus bars on the front side to the backside, reducing shading on the front side of the cell. The connections are made through holes in the silicon with the same composition as the bus bars. Employed as a via paste and p-contact metallization for back side tabbing interconnects, Solamet® PV701 features electrical contact to front side silver grid structures, high-mechanical strength, low shunting, high-line conductivity, and solderability as a p-contact metallization.

Bandpass Filters

REO (Boulder, CO) currently offers bandpass filters for operation in the visible (380nm — 760nm), near infrared (600nm — 1100nm), and mid-infrared (1.3μm — 2.6μm) spectral ranges. Nominal bandwidth is 1% (FWHM) of the center wavelength, with a peak transmission of 60% and a linearity of ±0.5%. The filters can be delivered on a wide array of optical glass, fused silica, as well as other substrate materials in the 3 × 1.5mm (L x W) to 150 × 65mm size range. Short wave pass and long wave pass edge filters are also available over the same spectral range and substrate sizes. Filters are fabricated using ion beam sputtering (IBS) technology in order to minimize scatter and absorption.

High-Speed Laser Controls

FANUC Factory Automation America (FANUC FA America) (Hoffman Estates, IL) has introduced the Series 30i/31i-L MODEL B high-speed laser controls, which deliver seamless choreography between axes motion and power modulation. The Series 30i/31i-L MODEL B provides up to 8MB of non-volatile internal memory available to store constant inventory nests. External interaction via ATA or Compact Flash memory cards bump up an additional 2GB of part program storage. The device includes a USB port, where commercially available USB storage devices may also be connected to store and transfer large programs. For increased processing capability, a fast data server can also be installed in the CNC providing up to 4GB of flash memory and a 100-GBit Ethernet connection. A fiber optic connection between the CNC and an integrated PC front-end allows the hard disk to be used for part program storage.

Imaging Fluorescence Microscope

TILL Photonics (Victor, NY) has announced its dual-color, 2-photon imaging fluorescence microscope, IntraVital2P. The IntraVital2P facilitates imaging at low-light levels and improves SNRs for dynamic measurements deep within highly scattering tissue. Using TILL’s Yanus IV digital scanhead and voice coilbased z focus drive, the IntraVital2P scans large areas (up to 22mm field diagonal) and acquires 3D images with reduced phototoxic effects. The microscope combines excursions of up to 7.5mm with 50nm resolution and a step response time of

Refractive Index Analysis

CRAIC Technologies, Inc. (San Dimas, CA) has joined with Laboratory Imaging to create rIQ™, a tool that analyzes glass trace evidence. rIQ™, or Refractive Index Quantification, combines image analysis software, optical design, and electronics to enable criminalists in modern forensic laboratories to measure the refractive index of multiple glass fragments simultaneously. The automated system uses the thermal immersion method, as defined by the standard ASTM E1967-98. rIQ™ is offered as a standalone package, as an add-on package to CRAIC Technologies microspectrophotometers, and as an upgrade package for older units already in the field. A standalone package consists of a phase contrast microscope, a high resolution digital camera, the optical interface, a thermal stage, the controlling electronics, and the rIQ™ software.

Plano-Convex Axicons

Edmund Optics (EO) (Barrington, NJ), introduces its Plano-Convex (PCX) Axicons. The lenses, which feature one conical surface and one plano surface, produce a non-diffractive ring-shaped beam that increases in diameter over distance, while retaining a constant ring thickness. When Plano-Convex (PCX) Axicons are used in conjunction with a collimated Gaussian Beam, they create an approximation of a Bessel beam. Edmund’s Plano-Convex Axicons are available uncoated and with VIS coating in apex angles from 90° to 179°, with a diameter of 25.4 mm. Featuring a precision fused silica sub-
strate, Plano-Convex (PCX) Axicons are also available with an Ultraviolet-Anti-Reflection (UV-AR) coating. The Axicons have apex angles of 90° and 130°, and a diameter of 25.4 mm.

Positioning Sensor

The Inspector P30 Positioning Sensor series from SICK (Minneapolis, MI) offers a flexible method for part location and provides a precise positioning point of a known target. The P30 reports the X, Y, and rotation angle of the taught part over TCP/IP Ethernet communication or via 4 digital switching outputs. When working with known objects, the user can add in “grip regions” to verify that part is unobstructed and can easily be picked by an automated picking system or robot. The Inspector P30 also adds functions for giving position information of irregular shaped objects, known as blob detection. This method allows users to work with objects that are less repeatable in shape, such as food picked from a belt. The user defines the criteria of the blob, including pixel intensity, area, number of blobs (min/max), and rotation angle. The P30 can then report the details of the blob to the user via TCP/IP. The Inspector P30 has integrated lighting and interchangeable lenses.

Tecplot Chorus™

Tecplot Chorus™ post-processing software from Tecplot, Bellevue, WA, allows engineers to discover trends and anomalies in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) studies with a large number of cases, and simultaneously see the underlying fluid-dynamic phenomena that cause these variations. The software analyzes from one to thousands of simulation cases at the same time and incorporates a simulation data management system for both test and computational data. Tecplot Chorus integrates analysis and quality assurance processes with features designed to manage, analyze, and visualize large amounts of metadata; identify trends and anomalies; and link them to the underlying physics. Uses can view 3D surfaces within a flow field with a single mouse click, including grid-works of actual computational data points on body surfaces, slices through a flow field, boundary surfaces, iso-surfaces, and streamlines. Users can filter and compare cases, and calculate differences between solutions or sets of solutions.
