Custom Brakes Meet the Challenges of Gearless Motor Elevators

Standard braking systems could not meet the difficult speed, energy, and dynamic torque constraints.

A manufacturer of low and high-rise elevators faced a challenge when customers began calling for a flexible elevator to meet the needs of the growing mid-rise, mixed-use building market. The global construction boom of mid-rise buildings can be attributed to several factors. Developers are more apt to build “short” because it requires less capital and the time to get permits approved is reduced considerably, especially in developing countries.

New Products: April 2017 Motion Design

Variable Frequency Drives

Through a new partnership, variable frequency drives (VFDs) from American Control Electronics (South Beloit, IL) will now be offered as a product add-on to Brother Gearmotors’ portfolio of sub-fractional AC gearmotors and reducers. OEMs have access to an optimized VFD for the Brother sub-fractional power range instead of purchasing an offthe- shelf VFD that may not be the best fit for the application. For example, a user buying a sub-fractional HP (1/100th to 1/6th HP) gear motor will not have to choose an off-the-shelf VFD rated for 1/4 HP. ACE’s microprocessor-based VFDs control AC motor speed and torque by varying input frequency and voltage.

Darmindra Arumugam, Senior Research Technologist, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, CA

In outdoor locations, firefighters and emergency responders can use GPS technology to track one another. Indoor environments like high-rises and steel-reinforced structures, however, frequently block radio signals. With the development of POINTER (Precision Outdoor and Indoor Navigation and Tracking for Emergency Responders), Darmindra Arumugam has addressed the sensing challenge, and provided a potentially game-changing tool for search and rescue teams.

Optical Design Software

Lambda Research Corporation (Littleton, MA) has released OSLO 7, which contains significant updates and enhancements. OSLO 7 includes Windows 10 support, improved Zemax and CodeV import, and STEP export that supports all surface types as well as updated Ohara, Hikari, Hoya, and Schott glass catalogs direct from the manufacturer. In addition to classical lens design features, OSLO (Optics Software for Layout and Optimization) is used to simulate and analyze the performance of optical systems by combining advanced ray tracing, analysis, and optimization methods with the only compiled macro language in an optical design program.

Differential Measurement System

The Measuring Division of Kaman Precision Products, Inc. (Middletown, CT) has released the KD-5100 differential measurement system, which provides resolution to a nanometer of positional change. Featuring a small package size – only 2 x 2.12 x 0.75 inches thick – the KD-5100 is a good choice for applications where space is a limiting factor. It is manufactured to MIL-H-38534, with MIL-SPEC components used throughout the electronics module wherever possible. The KD-5100 features rugged construction, with a mean time between failures of better than 238,000 hours in a space flight environment and 55,000 hours in a tactical environment.

Smart Cameras

EVT (Karlsruhe, Germany) offers three ZYNQ platforms for the EyeVision machine vision software. The systems are based on a DualCore ARM with FPGA. The EyeCheck ZQ smart camera features a 20 x 20 50 mm housing size, an S-Mount adapter and 10 freely programmable IOs and interfaces such as Ethernet, RS485 and CAN. In cases where space is not limited, a bigger ZYNQ smart camera can be used, such as a camera of the EyeCheck 4xxx, or EyeCheck 9xxx series. With a C-Mount lens adapter and more I/O interfaces the cameras are suitable for almost all applications. Also because of the C-Mount adapter all C-Mount lenses can be used: telecentric, endocentric, and hypercentric lenses.

Optical Device Tester

Anritsu Company (Richardson, TX) has introduced the BERTWave MP2110A, an all-in-one instrument that conducts simultaneous BER measurements and eye pattern analysis to more efficiently evaluate multi-channel optical devices used in optical communications systems, including 100GbE, InfiniBand EDR, and 32G Fibre Channel. The BERTWave MP2110A features a built-in BERT that can be configured with up to 4 channels at up to 28.2 Gbit/s, and up to a 2-channel sampling oscilloscope. This single-instrument design allows the BERTWave MP2110A to conduct simultaneous TRx BER measurements of multi-channel optical modules used by 100GbE standards, such as QSFP28, and other standards, such as InfiniBand EDR and 32G Fibre Channel, as well as simultaneous 2-channel eye pattern analyses.
