A company seeks technologies or “safeners” that minimize the negative impact of pesticides on crops, such as physiological or cosmetic damage. The safener must have utility on a broad combination of crops, result in no inhibition effect or other performance consequences on the active ingredient, and have a minimum two-year shelf life under varying temperatures. Small, Mechanical Valve for Use With Propellant Gas

A valve technology is sought that can be used with a propellant- gas-based device aimed at the consumer goods industry. The valve will be used with a canister of propellant gas, in a handheld consumer device, and needs to be small, lightweight, and low-cost. The size should be in the millimeter to centimeter range, weigh less than 5 grams, require no priming, be air-actuated, allow a flow rate between 25 mL/sec and 90 mL/sec, and be manufactured from materials that meet European Union or FDA requirements.

Accurate Laser Micro-Etching

A one-step laser etching process proves advantageous for the microfabrication of optics, electromechanical systems, and fluidics. Utilizing a laser-absorbing fluid against the back side of virtually any solid, transparent material, any of a number of lasers can perform micro-etching of 1 millimicron to 10 millimicrons. Etching can employ two or more lasers on transparent plates, cylinders, rods, films, vessels, or blocks. The resulting etched design may resemble hatching, a grid array, a bubble array, or any special design.

Microscopically Reinforced Polymers Without Fibers or Fillers

This micro-reinforcement technology enables new applications where existing thermoplastics, elastomers, thermosets, and reinforcing technologies have not had sufficient toughness or fracture strength, particularly at elevated temperatures. The new reinforcement technology does not compromise the base polymer’s inherent characteristics such as heat and chemical resistance. The technology can be used for elastomers as well as for polymers (both thermosetting and thermoplastic types). The resulting composite is available in sheet precursor form, which can then be converted into different molded shapes.

Technology to Deposit Spray on the Underside of Crop Plants

A company seeks a technology to enable sprayable fungicides and a new additive that is compatible with current insecticides and fungicides. The technology must treat both sides of the leaves uniformly. Moreover, since spraying equipment represents a major time and cost investment from growers, the growers’ existing spraying practices must not be changed with new equipment or retrofits. Fast-Acting, Broad-Spectrum Disinfectant

A broad-spectrum pathogen disinfectant is sought that can kill Clostridium difficile (spore phase) in less than five minutes of contact time; preferably within a minute or less. A formulation that requires longer than a minute is also of interest if it can be formulated to provide ongoing protection. Ideally, the proposed solution will be “green”; that is, environmentally responsible in its formulation, manufacture, and effect on the environment after use. Metals such as copper, zinc, or silver ions cannot be part of the formulation.

Hydrogen Reclamation and Reutilization

John C. Stennis Space Center (SSC) provides rocket engine propulsion testing for NASA’s space programs. Since the development of the space shuttle, every Space Shuttle Main Engine (SSME) has undergone acceptance testing at SSC before going to Kennedy Space Center (KSC) for integration into the space shuttle. The SSME is a large cryogenic rocket engine that uses Liquid Hydrogen (LH2) as the fuel. As NASA moves to the new ARES V launch system, the main engines on the new vehicle, as well as the upper stage engine, are currently baselined to be cryogenic rocket engines that will also use LH2. The main rocket engines for the ARES V will be larger than the SSME, while the upper-stage engine will be approximately half that size. As a result, significant quantities of hydrogen will be required during the development, testing, and operation of these rocket engines.

Tamper-Evident Packaging for Consumer Products

Tamper-evidence properties are often achieved by adding secondary packaging such as foil seals or heat-shrink seals that inflate the cost of the container. This invention provides a proven technology to produce an injection-molded, tamperevident plastic lid for a container that can be used in the absence of a foil lid, and yet provides an effective hermetic seal. Even after its initial opening, the lid reseals air- and water-tight. It is available in 1,000-ml and 500-ml sizes, but can be molded to requirements. This product is ideal for yogurt, ice cream, sauce, and even non-food items such as washing powder, paint, and products where protection against moisture is required after opening.

Most containers that have a foil seal also have a secondary lid that fits loosely on the tub after the foil seal is removed. Such lids do not offer water– and air–tight sealing. Secondary seals such as foil seals add to the cost of the packaging and prevent the product from being screened by metal detectors to detect metal parts in the final product.

Microscale Atomic Clock Enables Applications in GPS, and Radio Channel Density

Most atomic clocks are bench-bound, and even portable units can weigh in excess of 10 pounds. This invention is a cesium laser atomic clock that can be constructed using photoresist MEMS (microelectromechanical system) technology. The glass cell measures about 1 cubic centimeter and it operates using only about tens of milliwatts of electricity. The technology can bring timing at atomic clock accuracy to applications such as GPS, frequency hopping for security, and communication channel density. By using a cesium cell, a laser diode, and a photo diode, the system requires no volume resonator to control the frequency of laser light.

By using MEMS manufacturing techniques, this miniature atomic clock offers an order of magnitude decrease in size and power consumption, and stability and accuracy comparable to atomic clocks many times its size. Because of its size and power consumption, the clock opens up new opportunities in fields that require miniature, extremely accurate clocks.

Rocket Engine Altitude Simulation Technologies

John C. Stennis Space Center is embarking on a very ambitious era in its rocket engine propulsion test history. The first new large rocket engine test stand to be built at Stennis Space Center in over 40 years is under construction. The new A3 Test Stand is designed to test very large (294,000 lbf thrust) cryogenic propellant rocket engines at a simulated altitude of 100,000 feet.
