It is common, especially in the aerospace industry, for parts that are fracture critical to be Liquid Penetrant Inspected (LPI) prior to installation. Also known as Dye Penetrant Inspection (DPI) or simply Penetrant Testing (PT), this method is used to detect micro-cracks or other defects that could serve as an initiation site for failure. In order to properly execute a penetrant test, the surface of a metal part must be thoroughly clean of any debris, smeared metal, or any amorphous layer that may be hiding a hairline crack thus yielding a false reading.

The Future of Exploration Starts With 3D Printing

Last year, engineers at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, AL, tested an additive manufacturing process that is being used to make some of the parts for NASA’s new rocket, the Space Launch System (SLS), more efficiently and affordably without compromising performance and safety. N5 Sensors is a University of Maryland spinoff that is commercializing a disruptive chipscale gas sensor technology for industrial, environmental, and safety monitoring. The microsensor arrays on a single chip could replace multiple conventional macro-scale gas sensors used in portable multi-gas detectors. These new sensors are small, accurate, low power, and capable of detecting multiple gases at the same time. Using a patent-pending sensing architecture, N5 is working to develop low-cost, ultra-compact, multi-gas detectors that can be interfaced with mobile devices, allowing industrial workers, first-responders, and soldiers to assess the dangers of their surroundings rapidly and accurately in real time using their smartphones or other mobile devices.

A software-based innovation called Mesh was developed that provides a single sign-on capability to the built-in public key authentication mechanism of Secure Shell (SSH) using system call interposition. Mesh is a secure, lightweight grid middleware. Each Mesh installation is dedicated to serving a particular virtual organization (VO), which is defined to be a dynamic collection of individuals, institutions, and resources. Mesh allows individuals in one VO to execute SSH remote commands on Mesh-accessible resources within other cooperating VOs using a single Mesh SSH private key generated at the local VO.
