How the Automotive and Ground Transportation Industry is Accelerating with Pervasive Engineering Simulation

Consumers are demanding efficient, reliable, safe, environmentally friendly, smarter, connected and increasingly autonomous vehicles. Regulators continue to demand improvements in safety and emissions. The automotive industry must deliver these increasingly complex products to market faster, in the face of increasing competition from traditional sources, new geographies and new entrants and with continued pressure to reduce cost. Failure of any magnitude can result in significant, and even irreparable, financial and brand impact.

Three Things Medical Device Designers Need to Know About UVC LEDs

The global infection control market is projected to reach $22 billion by 2022 with disinfection products, which would include UVC devices, representing the largest growth segment. UVC LEDs offer medical equipment designers an exciting new way to develop hand-held or portable disinfection devices to greatly enhance HAI prevention in a wide range of healthcare applications. Importantly, the design and operating flexibility of UVC LEDs means that these devices could be used during routine daily patient management and not limited to empty terminal room events.

NSK MOTORIZED BALL SCREW ACTUATOR (MBSA SERIES): NSK Achieves Space Saving Design with Linear Precision for Medical Applications

NSK Americas examines how advancements in technology have reduced equipment size used for medical applications. Contributing to this trend, NSK has developed the MBSA Series (motorized ball screw actuator). The new design eliminates the need for a separate motor-to-ball screw coupling. The compact space-saving design reduces system inertia and eliminates alignment error that can occur when the motor and ball screw are separately mounted. Not only is the new design compact, but it’s also precise. NSK uses a precision ground ball screw versus the traditional lead screw option. This white paper details why a precision ground ball screw is the optimal solution.

MDSAP and a MDSAP Audit Experience

The Medical Device Single Audit Program (MDSAP) is a new medical device auditing plan with potential for several advantages. This discussion addresses an actual MDSAP audit experience and demonstrates how the organization dealt with its complexities. The MDSAP program is described including country involvements. Audit personnel and experiences are discussed. Example documents are described. An example hourly schedule is presented. The observation rating system is described and example audit finding are presented. Differences compared to and FDA audit are considered. The MDSAP is the biggest change in medical device regulations since the introduction of the European MDD in the 1990’s. Time will tell whether MDSAP will ultimately lead to a better quality in design, manufacturing, and regulatory control.

Building Better Bonds

Until recently, there was little up-to-date research about adhesives that could be used with Eastman Tritan™ copolyester. By collaborating with Henkel Corporation, whose LOCTITE® adhesive continues to be tested at the industry’s most comprehensive ISO 10993 biocompatibility standards, Eastman was able to determine which combination of resins and adhesives could help optimize a manufacturer’s assembly process. Results proved that Tritan, together with LOCTITE® adhesives, provides improved process efficiency for a wide range of medical devices.
