Laser Cutting System

The new CL-400 CO2 laser cutting system from Cincinnati Incorporated (Harrison, OH) uses the water-cooled, high-speed linear motor drives pioneered by Cincinnati, and the same powerful HMI touchscreen control and nesting software found on the company’s other CO2 and fiber laser cutting systems. Dual 5 × 10 ft. (1.5 × 3 m) pallets and an optional modular material handling system (MMHS) reduce beam-off time and further boost productivity. Designed for high throughput and all-around material versatility, the CL-400 delivers fast positioning speeds of 12,000 ipm and up to 1" processing range on mild steel.

10 to 1000eV Spectrometer

The new McPherson (Chelmsford, MA) Model 248/310 spectrometer can easily make spectral measurements around 13 nanometers and throughout the extreme vacuum ultraviolet and soft x-ray wavelength region. It is ideal for work from 10eV to more than 1000eV. The spectrometer features one meter focal length optics built into a compact Rowland circle instrument. Grazing incidence angles used in the instrument deliver high reflective efficiency. For direct detection of extreme vacuum ultraviolet and soft x-ray wavelengths, windowless back illuminated CCD’s are used. Sensitivity of CCD’s at short wavelengths can surpass that in the visible spectral region. The CCD’s aggressive thermoelectric cooling also reduces readout noise. When gated detection is required, open microchannel plate intensifiers are available.

Polymicro’s proprietary FBPI fiber leverages the benefits and mitigates the limitations of standard optical fibers. Featuring improved transmission properties over a much wider spectral range, the silica-based, broadband FBPI fiber is available in a range of densities and can be produced in core diameters from 50-600 μm.

Edmund Optics (EO) (Barrington, NJ) has introduced new fast axis collimators. These versatile lenses are designed for beam shaping or laser diode collimation applications. Fast Axis Collimators are compact, high performance aspheric cylindrical lenses, designed for fast axis collimation. The combination of aspheric cylindrical lens designs and high numerical apertures (N.A.) deliver uniform collimation of the entire laser diode output while maintaining excellent beam quality. Fast Axis Collimators feature a standard AR coating for 790-990 nm and provide greater than 99% transmission across the designated spectral range. Fast axis collimators measure 12 mm long and are available in five models with focal lengths of 0.29 mm, 0.365 mm, 0.59 mm, 0.91 mm and 1.49 mm.

Choosing Chiller Pumps to Cool Medical Lasers

Medical lasers must be cooled either by premounted or portable chiller systems.

Laser systems continue to grow in application use throughout the medical industry. Applications for laser systems include diagnostic analysis systems, DNA sequencing systems, dental cleaning and surgery, skin care, eye surgery, tattoo removal, and much more. These systems commonly require cooling of the laser and other electronic components either by air flow on lower power laser systems, or by fluid circulation/chiller systems on higher power lasers. Higher power laser require an increased level of cooling capacity that results in systems that provide several gallons per minute of fluid circulation. This increased flow rate will maintain the laser and other electronics at the proper operating conditions.
