Bringing Space Robotics to Earth Applications

Researchers at NASA’s Johnson Space Center (JSC), in collaboration with General Motors, have designed a state-of-the-art, highly dexterous, humanoid robot: Robonaut 2 (R2). R2 is made up of multiple component technologies and systems – dexterous hands, compliant limbs, integrated sensors, redundant safety systems, machine vision cameras, and much more. R2’s nearly 45 patented and patent-pending technologies have the potential to be game-changers in multiple industries, including logistics and distribution, medical and industrial robotics, and beyond. Ron Diftler, JSC’s Robonaut Project Manager, will provide an overview of this exceptional suite of technologies now available for licensing.

There and Back Again: The Migration of Robotic Arm Technology from Mars to Earth

The Lunar Orbiting Laser Altimeter (LOLA) on the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) launched in 2009 was NASA's first multi-beam lidar. LOLA has produced unprecedented topographic maps of the Lunar surface. LOLA used a Diffractive Optical Element (DOE) to produce five beams from a single laser for enhanced topographic spatial resolution.

Heat Transfer Simulation in Materials Processing

Thermal processes are often used to create materials with specific mechanical and physical properties for use in advanced product designs in many industries including medical products, automobiles, and aerospace. Gases or liquids are typically used to heat or cool materials via conjugate heat transfer. In this webinar, we will demonstrate the use of COMSOL Multiphysics to investigate the effect of fluid flow rate on the quenching of a hot component. Conjugate heat transfer can occur via conduction, convection and even radiation in the case of high processing temperatures and therefore represents a full-featured heat transfer and CFD application requiring multiphysics analysis for accurate simulation. A Q&A session will take place at the conclusion of the webinar.
