AC Drives

Vacon Plc (Mequon, WI) offers the VACON® 100, VACON® 100 X, and VACON® 20 X AC drives. The VACON 100 is a multi-purpose drive that can be adapted for hundreds of different applications. It features fully graphical multilingual display and extended built-in block programming for drive customization. Features include a Safe Torque Off (STO) function; onboard Ethernet-based communication protocols such as EtherNet/IP, PROFINET IO, and Modbus TCP; and ATEX-certified motor over-temperature protection. The VACON 100 X and VACON 20 X are part of a line of decentralized AC drives for situations where space is restricted. They feature IP66/Type 4X enclosures, and can be used in harsh conditions.

Bishop-Wisecarver Corp. (Pittsburg, CA) has announced The Radial Wheel, a single-row, deep-groove ball bearing designed for applications with specified radial loading conditions. The wheel enables reliable motion in environments exposed to debris such as sawdust or grit. The bearings make it possible to convey heavy loads without additional capabilities unnecessary to the application requirements. The 90-degree vee-groove bearings work in finished products like sliding wall panels and motorized doors and windows.

Crystal Instruments Corp. (Santa Clara, CA) has introduced the Spider-81, a modular, distributed, scalable vibration control system with centralized DSP architecture and operation via PC, WiFi-enabled PDA, or iPad. It directly integrates time-synchronized Ethernet connectivity with an embedded DSP centralized architecture. Its patented dual A/D design enables it to achieve a 130-dB input dynamic range. Each measurement channel can detect signals ranging from 6 μV to 20V, with a design that eliminates the need for the input range or gain settings found on traditional controllers.

ABB Robotics (Auburn Hills, MI) has introduced the IRB 120T, a multipurpose 6-axis robot. It is suited for assembly and pick-andplace applications requiring reorientation of the product, commonly found in the food and beverage, consumer packaging, consumer electronics, electrical, and automotive industries. The robot features path repeatability of 0.01 mm, motion control and path accuracy, and weighs 25 kg (55 lbs). It has a standard payload of 3 kg (6.6 lbs), a vertical wrist payload of 4 kg (8.8 lbs), a reach of 580 mm, stroke of 411 mm, and the ability to reach 112 mm below its base.

This technical brief provides an overview of existing types of rotary sensor technologies, and compares the strengths and weaknesses of each type for use as through-hole shaft angle sensing devices. Today’s sensor technologies for robotic and medical applications include many devices that have evolved from industrial applications. Because of this general migration, they are not ideally suited to the requirements in new robotic and medical products. Specifically, conventional contacting and non-contacting sensing solutions do not offer the customization, small package size(s), and environmental and durability requirements that are so necessary in these custom applications.
