Determining an Effective Analog Sampling Rate

Q: How often should my equipment make measurements? A: This question often arises when people draft plans to automatically measure a physical quantity such as temperature, pressure, acidity, liquid level, and so on. You can approach this problem in several ways, from an educated guess to a mathematical analysis of your system. The examples that follow use temperature measurements because people measure temperature more than any other physical characteristic.

Refractory Metal Fasteners for Extreme Conditions: The Basics

There is a wide range of metal fasteners commonly available for standard applications, but what if your application is at very high temperature or in a highly corrosive environment? Sometimes the more commonly available fasteners are just not up to the job. Enter high-performance refractory metal fasteners. Refractory metal fasteners – nuts, bolts (also called screws or machine screws) and washers – are ideal for situations that involve high temperature, high voltage, magnetism and harsh corrosive environments.

How to Maximize Temperature Measurement Accuracy

Thermocouples are the most versatile and widely used devices for temperature measurements. Most test engineers are aware of the measurement errors caused by thermocouples but not always about the errors caused by the measurement system itself. This technical note will focus on the lesser known and important aspect called "Self-Calibration" and how it can be used to overcome errors in temperature measurement.

Re:Vision: A New Paradigm for Mid-Lifecycle Design Changes

For decades, replacing key components during the mid-lifecycle design refresh was seen as simply too costly and burdensome. Changes had to wait until the next generation. Today, technology changes too fast to wait to add new capabilities. Fortunately, there are other options. With the right partners and suppliers involved, a mid-lifecycle component change can provide cost savings and greater performance capabilities. This white paper explores when and why a mid-lifecycle component change makes sense.

3D Printing in Space: The Next Frontier

NASA has a long-term strategy for In-Space Manufacturing that includes fabricating components and equipment on demand for human missions to the Moon, Mars, and beyond. To support this strategy, NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) and Made In Space, Inc. have developed the 3D Printing In Zero-G Technology Demonstration for the International Space Station (ISS). The experiment will be the first machine ever to perform 3D printing in space.

Building a Test System for High-Speed Data Streaming Applications

High-speed data streaming applications typically require maximum accuracy and long sampling times, including such applications as spectral monitoring, signal intelligence, LIDAR testing, optical fiber testing, radar and satellite signal acquisition, and software defined radio systems. These present unique engineering challenges requiring high throughput, and identifying design flaws and problems can contribute to reduced development costs and time to market, avoiding field recalls and costly system redesigns. The white paper discusses techniques for optimizing configuration of systems supporting high-bandwidth applications, by: Enabling high-speed real-time data streaming Designing applications optimizing system streaming performance Furnishing benchmarks that can be achieved in stream-to-disk and stream-to-memory applications
