Additive Manufacturing Initiatives at Sandia National Laboratories

Sandia National Laboratories has been pioneering development and commercialization of additive manufacturing (AM), commonly referred to as 3D printing, for more than 30 years. Sandia has a wealth of experience developing unique AM solutions for a variety of compelling national security applications. In this white paper, Sandia engineers provide a rare inside look at what the lab has learned about AM during the past 30 years. Sandia’s mission and core objectives take advantage of AM’s virtues and benefits. Some of Sandia’s current research projects, as well as direct write, energetics, and geometry optimization, are highlighted.

The Benefits of 3D Printing for Medical Implant and Prostheses Development

3D printing is one of the world’s fastest growing technologies, and is already revolutionizing the many areas of medical manufacturing in ways similar to how computers revolutionized communication. Using the right input, medical files such as 2D imaging (MRI or CT scans) can be used to create customized anatomical models, medical devices, and prosthetics. Manufacturing parts in this way reduces time and cost by as much as 80-90%. In this white paper from Stratasys, find out how medical professionals are actively exploring the vast possibilities that 3D printing offers.

Designing a Phased Array Antenna Using Antenna Magus and CST STUDIO SUITE

Antenna synthesis lets engineers investigate many potential designs and produce antennas that fit the specifications quickly. For effects that cannot be accounted for analytically such as edge effects and mutual coupling, full-wave 3D simulation can complement synthesis tools and allow designs to be checked and fine-tuned. This article explores the synthesis of an antenna array, using a phased array satellite communications antenna as an example.

Adhesion Reduction of Semiconductor Dicing Tape

Many semiconductor wafer processing techniques involve the fixing of a thin layer of dicing tape to a wafer during the final processing stages. To allow removal of the die from the tape, the adhesion properties of the tape may be reduced with exposure to high-intensity UV light.

3D Printing of Aerospace Parts: A Real Solution with Real Benefits

Innovation in aerospace is accelerating, advancing frontiers at the component and product levels in manufacturing operations, rethinking supply chains and, in some cases, at the business model level. Parts can now be created with complex geometries and shapes that, in many cases, are impossible to create without 3D printing. Low aerospace volumes make 3D printing an attractive, lower-cost alternative to replace conventional CNC machining and other tooling processes for smaller-scale parts and finished assemblies. Aerospace innovators are embracing 3D printing beyond prototyping, and are aggressively pursuing new applications for the technology. This white paper describes how the aerospace industry can reap the many benefits of 3D printing to reduce expenses associated with time, waste, and productivity.
