The nuvoDisc flat brushless dc motors from Portescap (West Chester, PA) measure just 32 mm diameter and 11.7 mm long, suiting it to space-constrained applications such as barcode scanners.

The motors’ high-speed slotless design reduces vibration and eliminates cogging to provide smoother operation and better accuracy to maintain a stable speed compared with conventional miniature flat motors. A slotted design is available for applications requiring detent torque, such as damper control in HVAC applications.

Portescap’s nuvoDisc technology produces a motor that is 75% shorter and 90% lighter than conventional flat motors, according to the company. It offers speeds of up to 50,000 rpm and mechanical power output of up to 30 watts. The technology delivers quick design integration and mechanical installation, and provides higher continuous speed compared with conventional flat motors.
