Vision Research, Wayne, NJ, offers the four-mega-pixel Phantom® v640 digital high-speed camera, which provides six gigapixel-per-second throughput and enhanced light sensitivity. It offers a recording speed of more than 1,400 frames per second at full resolution of 2560 × 1600. For higher frame rates, users can reduce resolution. It can record at more traditional frame rates for normal use — as low as 10 fps. The camera incorporates a proprietary CMOS imaging sensor. Micro-lens technology uses a tiny lens bound to each pixel to direct incoming light into the active areas of the photo site.

It is available with a color or monochrome CMOS sensor, supporting both 8- and 12-bit pixel depths, and comes with 8 GB of high-speed dynamic RAM, with the option to upgrade to 16 or 32 GB. The RAM is dividable up to 64 segments, allowing users to record multiple shots, back-to-back, without having to download data from the camera. A video-out port allows recordings to be viewed with a viewfinder.
