Global Lighting Technologies, a manufacturer of LED-based, edge-lit light guide solutions for general illumination applications, recently retrofitted its North American sales & engineering headquarters with LED ceiling lights.
In a classic example of practicing what it preaches, GLT has replaced the facility’s existing fluorescent lights with its UL-certified LED-based 2'x2' and 1'x4' ceiling lights throughout the building. The new lights utilize GLT’s edge-lit light guide technology, where the LEDs are strategically spaced along one or two edges of the light guide to achieve high levels of efficiency using the fewest LEDs, with the highest possible uniformity. Each of the ceiling lights utilizes 100 LEDs, with 50 LEDs spaced along each of two edges of the 2'×2' down-lights, and 100 LEDs spaced along one edge of the 1'×4' ceiling lights. The new fixtures were fabricated in their entirety at GLT’s Taipei, Taiwan location, one of the four manufacturing facilities the company operates in Asia.
The lobby, entry hallway, large conference room, and selected work areas were equipped with 2'×2' lights to fit the existing 2'×2' ceiling grid. In the rest of the facility (small conference room, engineering area, individual offices, restrooms, back hallway, and break room), GLT installed the 1'×4' ceiling lights.
All of the new LED ceiling lights employ the micro-optical pixel-based light extraction technology pioneered by GLT. This advanced and highly efficient technology enables very thin light guides to be designed to spread the light from the LEDs in an exceptionally uniform manner, extracting light precisely at each point across the panel. The light extraction features can be designed in a controlled, progressive process, where iterations can be reduced and module-to-module variation is minimal. This enhances the capability for custom designs and for high-volume production.
In addition to providing its employees with more attractive lighting with less glare, GLT is also starting to reap the energy- saving benefits that LED lighting provides. On average, the new light fixtures utilize 65% less power than the units they have replaced, significantly reducing the power consumption of the entire facility.
