ABB (Auburn Hills, MI) introduced YuMi, a collaborative dual-arm industrial robot designed for small parts assembly environments. It features dual arms, flexible hands, a universal parts feeding system, camera-based part location, lead-through programming, and motion control. YuMi has a lightweight yet rigid magnesium skeleton covered with a floating plastic casing. The casing is wrapped in soft padding to absorb impacts, enabling the robot to operate in very close collaboration with humans. It has human dimensions and movements, and has no pinch points so nothing sensitive can be harmed as the axes open and close. If YuMi senses an unexpected impact, such as a collision with a coworker, it can pause its motion within milliseconds, and the motion can be restarted again by pressing a button.
