A radically new electronic building block is being proposed. Transistors take an input signal and transfer it into a current output, like a variable resistor. Hence the name—a combination of “transfer” and “resistor.” The new device would transfer an input signal into a voltage output, like a variable capacitor, hence “trancitor.”
A typical transistor-only voltage amplifier requires four transistors, whereas a trancitor amplifier would require only one — the input device to feed the trancitor. This pairing would be far simpler, more energy-efficient, and faster. But it has yet to be designed. A significant amount of engineering is needed to actualize the trancitor, perhaps using the Hall effect.
