SpinDX: Medical Diagnostic Tool
Sandia National Laboratory researchers have developed a lab-on-a-disk platform known as SpinDx that they believe will be faster, less expensive, and more versatile than current medical diagnostic tools. The technology can determine a patient's white blood cell count, analyze important protein markers, and process up to 64 assays from a single sample - all in a matter of minutes. Here, Sandia researcher Anup Singh talks about SpinDx and the advantages it offers for medical, biodefense, and food testing applications.

00:00:03 pindy X is a portable device and is targeted for medical diagnostics the technology is based on something called immunoassays which have been around for decades if not longer and many people have tried to do something like this because there is an urgent need for devices that can run your samples in 10 to 15 minutes so for example when you go to see your doctor they take your blood
00:00:32 samples and they typically send those samples to be run in a central lab located far away from the doctor flash and it takes a week to get the results back and typically doctors will not get to you with the results for two to three weeks depending on the urgency of discussing those results what we are trying to do with a spin diet is to have the doctor have that conversation before
00:00:55 you have left his or her office we think that the spin DX could be useful for many different applications and we are hoping for companies which are interested in medical diagnostics in bio defense and homeland security applications and in food safety to come and engage us in a dialogue to take it to the next step as the name is pindy X implies there is a spinning involved and
00:01:24 so this takes advantage of centrifugal technology and we use that movement to move liquid around in a disk that is used in a spin DX you have a CD that goes in the device and all the nurse or the technician has to do is to type at a small amount of blood in that CD it's very simple to use and because of the simplicity of the device it's also amenable to many other applications
00:01:54 imagine first responders responding to a particular incident where we think that someone has released a biological warfare agent and we want this device to be simple enough that they can actually take some samples people in the field or at the airport and run them quickly and get results in 10 to 15 minutes if you think about poop security that's a major problem in this
00:02:19 country a key requirement for looking for presence of pathogens or toxins in food is that it has to be dirt-cheap otherwise it's cheaper to just throw the food away if you suspect that it might be contaminated with particular bacteria or a virus the spin DX runs assays that could be less than cents for acid hence making it usable or useful for people who would like to ask you in food for
00:02:46 contamination with toxins with bacteria with viruses what is unique about this is that we have finally figured out a way to do these assays which are fast so in 10 to 15 minutes you get the results without sacrificing any of the sensitivity so we want to make sure that we can look for things that we the doctor needs to look at to diagnose you as early as possible in the disease that
00:03:12 you might be suffering from be it cancer or some kind of infection so the combination of the speed the small size of the device and the fact that it is very sensitive makes it pretty unique compared to many other things that people have tried before you
