Functional, 3D-Printed Infant Models for Medical Training
Researchers from the Netherlands' Eindhoven University of Technology are 3D-printing highly realistic, functional infant medical simulation mannequins that could be used to provide vital feedback to doctors in training. Using MRI scans of an actual infant, the researchers 3D printed a copy of an infant ribcage, along with printed molds to cast replica organs. These organs include a heart with functioning valves, and lungs that inflate and deflate. The organs are placed inside the ribcage with sensors to track pressure points and give doctors in training live feedback. The mannequins are still in the prototyping and development stage, but the researchers hope they will soon help doctors receive much more accurate, life-saving training when it comes to treating small babies.
